Title: Coolant Level
Post by: megaomega123 on 24 May 2010, 13:36:26
Have used about 1 litre of coolant in 200 miles. No contamination in oil or header tank.
Where should I be looking for possible leaks?

HBV
Any other symptoms with HBV other than coolant usage? Cabin heaters working no problem.

If HBV has only a slight leak (which is variable dependent on settings) you will still have heat. Worth a visual check for signs of leakage

Not had a lot of time to look at this. Had a look under the car this morning and there is a significant amount of coolant coming from gearbox bell housing.
Is the hbv above this and still most probable cause?
Next question, easy job, time scale and any special tools?

The HBV is above the bell housing and its easy to see any staining if its leaking. Here's the how to

Location of leak and evidence of coolant does seem to point to HBV.
Not too bad a job..easier with wipers and scuttle removed and then access is passable, but other suggest removing wiper motor which does improve  working space alot, but not easy to get that out(well thats what I found ).
Should take about 1 hour maximum...set of pipe clip pliers usefull, but a pair of thin nosed molegrips better,or just wide reach pliers.Supply of coolant and last of all....some plasters as you will loose some skin unless you have very thin hands and arms.
Best of luck with it.

The only place I would buy one from is a Vauxhall dealers as pattern parts have been known to fail early and they are about £35 ;)

Hi I'm also loosing coolant but I think its coming from what looks like an electric valve under the header tank. This makes what sounds like a washing machine draining when turning on the ignition. This is a 96 pre face lift. What is it?

It's an electric water pump - part of a 'winter pack', something to do with helping to get heat into the cabin quicker. My 99 prefacelift doesn't have one  :y

So could this be leaking or is it hbv, & do I need it, can it be disconected?

Mine was 100% hbv. New vauxhall one @ £38 and only 20 minutes to change. I only sustained 4 minor scratches too, bonus.
Thanks to all that offered advice  :y

I think you should start a new post with specific details of your issue as it sounds completely different to hbv.
I think you will get better advice this way  :y
