Any suggestions on the following for 2.2 Auto 2002 plate, 101k miles
The Engine light has come on (Not the one with the spanner) and stays on.
THere has been a sudden fall off in MPG down from 30 to 25.
No really any other symptoms except a slight feeling that something is slipping when moving off from cold. It does not occur again until another cold start. I have not checked or changed the oil in the auto box and had the car from almost new (10k miles)

the auto box ecu will need to be read before could say how to fix, if you put were you live some one on here maybe able to help with tec2 etc :y

IIRC the EML light signifies a fault in the emissions side of the car. (the spanner light being electronics). So my first thought is it's not your autobox. I drive a 2.2 auto estate and fuel economy is poor at best 24 and more often 22 MPG for general 'mixed' driving, knocking on 27/28mpg on a run.As the previous 'OOfer said get your codes read asap. My suspicion is a code will show from elswhere, away from the box. Don't run it for too long with the EML on as if you're chucking a rich mixture in it won't be long before the cat starts to 'moan'. I'm assuming your car is petrol!

OK sound advice , thanks - I've ordered a tech 2 reader from fleabay
Yes it is petrol. If the engine picture light is not the route gearbox faults would go then I need to get back to engine basics and work out what is not functioning properly. I do get a misfire on startup sometimes but quickly clears, the exhaust manifold was repaired a few months back it may be leaking again.

Oh I should also have sadi - I do mixed driving and get consistent 30mpg normally

Many faults can make the gearbox go into limp mode and i think it takes of in 3rd gear from a standstill so may feel like its slipping ... when my camshaft sensor went it did this .
Hopefully it not actually the box :y

Highly unlikely unless it`s costing you upwards of £2K

Ok it was an OBD2 reader not a tech 2!

I am not saying that I am 100% correct but a theory I haver put forward here before is that crank sensor break down is a contributory factor to the gearbox limp mode issue. Before doing anything with the box I would try a new crank sensor as it is this that delivers the rpm to the box.
The emissions light I get from time to time and just reset with OBDII. The last couple of occasions and about 3 months or more apart coincide with low fuel or change of fuel.
Reset and keep an eye on it. If it happens infrequently live with it.
In other words Captain Mainwearing - "Don't panic!!"

Very rarely fails on the 4-pot. Cam sensor is the one that causes most problems

I think the scare story of autobox is a red herring, that I would not worry about until you have the engine codes.
Any OBDII reader should read the 2.2, but only Vauxhall specific readers can read other systems...
