top cams line up with the nockes on the top case, pulley lines up with the spike top right of the pulley, timiming markings are left side line old right side new (meaning belt) there are two types one with the words on and one with the lines, all should be lined up on number one piston front, before running engine turn engine by hand to make sure that the timing marks stay the same if not redo, if the pully if of when doing timing markins are at the bottom of the pully shaft. allways check by hand before running engine. hope this helps :y

E=exhaust, I=inlet

So right hand pulley is exhaust.

My money is on bent valves though....idling or not.

if you hear a clicking sound hard to describe sounds out of place then there is somthing wrong, easy to see better with the top off, when turning engine over by hand.
