Title: Coolant leak? Help!
Post by: estaszew on 09 June 2010, 06:44:17
I have something leaking in the right front (under/near the bumper).  It is red (so is my coolant), so that is what I believe it is.  I don't see any obvious signs of leaking under the hood, but I have the following pictures from under the car where I see the leak.  It's sporadic in its leaking. Any ideas??

Try fitting a new washer on the red drain plug as it may have perished..also for starters might be worth getting a pair of grips on the plug and seeing if just needs a bit more tightening.

Anyone know the sizes of the 2 o-rings on the drain tap?

Thanks for the suggestion.  So that is the radiator drain plug?

Do a Cooling System Pressure Test (http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1225142864)

On my previous car one of the plastic radiator headers split after bashing the chin spoiler on the entrance to a car park.

I doubt that it is the drain tap, it looks as though it is running down from higher up on the radiator.

Don't try tightening the drain tap, it don't make it seal any better the tighter is. As dbug says, there are 2 'O' rings on the tap. I seem to remember someone here having a crack in the side of his radiator. Have a good look around.  ;)

i will answer you!!

if you need part codes for vauxhall the
drain plug is 52463060
and the washer is 52462868

note that the washer has perished in andy's pic it's not the o'rings.....

double check the codes with vauxhall first but im sure they are correct...

the washer in my picture has rusted, it's a shake proof washer & has nothing at all to do with sealing, it's there to stop the drain tap shaking loose  ;). The sealing is done via the two 'O' rings  :y

I've just had mine fixed and it was the heater valve at the back of the engine. I only was only loseing coolant when the engine wasn't under pressure, like in stationary traffic.

As the whole drain tap is only a few quid I doubt that Vauxhall supply them seperately  :-/

I replaced my HBV a few years ago, but that leak was more at the rear of the engine.  Could that have gone bad again and cause the leaking near the front bumper?  I wish it leaked consistently so that I could pinpoint the issue.  Thanks everyone for the help and input!
