Title: Yet another headache
Post by: Marc Taylor on 12 June 2010, 18:50:40
I finally got round to sorting out my handbrake and tightening it up a little where i have discovered i have a o/s rear spring snapped.  Where is the best/cheapest place to get decent springs or would anybody have springs hanging around their garage somewhere??? Is changing the springs an easy job?? Its something i havent done before but something ill be more than happy to try and tackle.  Any help is always appreciated

Don't have spare springs but I can tell you they're quite easy to change.

Get the back end up in the air and wheels off, undo the big bolt on the bottom of the shocks.  Now you should be able to lever the suspension arm down enough to get the spring out.

If it won't go down enough (as can happen with standard springs - my cars all have shorter, lowered springs) slacken the bolts holding the diff up (best to drench them in release oil), put a trolley jack under the diff with a block of wood on the jack-pad to protect the diff casing.  Now remove the bolts and lower the jack until you can get the springs in.  DO NOT LET THE DIFF HANG UN-SUPPORTED YOU COULD KNACKER OR DISLODGE THE DRIVESHAFTS.

Check the rubber discs on the top and bottom spring seats for damage while you've got the springs out.

Slap it all back together and you're done.  Should take 2 hours tops.

Oh, and a wee tip - if you have to drop the diff, when you're putting it back up, use the fact that you can raise/lower the suspension arms with your jack under the diff to help you get the bottom bolts for the shocks back in.  i.e. jack the diff up until the shock bolt will just pop straight in, do them up and then bolt the diff back up.
