T reg Omega has had a gearbox rebuild at 60K (now on 75K) but has just begun to show a problem. Tried to start the car from P (Park) twice today and on both occasions the selector wouldnt move. I turned ignition off and on then revved and something eventually gave way and allowed me to select a gear but when I stopped and put it in P again the same thing occurred when I started her up.
Havent experienced this before, so is it early stages of gearbox failure or something less expensive (fingers quite tightly crossed) :-/

Its not gearbox failure its more likely the brake pedal switch. If you lift the snow button you will see a yellow iirc switch, press this and it will allow you to move the lever out of park ;)

i have a spare sensor (from vauxhall) for my 2.5 v6 auto. if you need a new one? just pm me

Say wha?
Thanks Andy and Pete but being a newbie I'm not entirely sure where the snow button is and how to lift it :-[?

Its next to the gear lever, put something thin uder it and lever it out but be careful not to mark your trim. It might be easier to lift the gear lever gaiter ;)

you can get omega haynes manuals from your local halfords (always handy to have lying around) i have atleast 100 lol:)

King Hell you people are amazing :y
Thanks to both Andy's for their manual assistance ;D
As for Spidey I found the snow button and did the rest and whatever I prodded underneath allowed me to move the gear stick :)
However thats obviously a short term solution to something else...........................maybe requiring a new sensor ?

As the previous post said replace the brake switch. As you will have noticed you cannot move out of park unless your foot is on the brake. When the brake switch fails you cannot move out of park because the relay does not know that your foot is on the brake!

It took a while but eventually the penny dropped. Thanks to you Martbax and everyone else. :y
PS. This also makes me think that OO.com could create a fault finding/solution database with all this knowledge flying around.
