Title: Roof rack for saloon
Post by: Dracoro on 10 March 2010, 13:28:43
Is there a cheap roof rack I can get for my Elite saloon?

Only need it as a one off (unless someone here can help me move a desk - if they have an estate - near Horsham?) but may as well keep it for future use.

Would be ideal if it were a one size fits all so can use on other cars....

AS Entwood says, use Thule or VX ones if your going to spend some money anyway. The Paddy Hoppiies and other Cheepies dont cut the ice.  :y

I got a pair of bars from Halfrauds for about £20 IIRC.

They've always done the job for me, used them for my roof box amongst other things.

Thanks. I will look in Halfords.

I only really need them to transport a desk so a temporary thing. That said, it'd be handy to keep the rack but want something that fits many cars. Can then use it on wife's Focus and when I ever replace the Omega on whatever car I get next etc.

I'm not sure there is a "one fits all".

The Omega needs the sort that attach to the roof gutters and many other cars (e.g. Astra) have dedicated fixings in the roof behind sliding covers.

So do standard gutter-mount bars fit as they did on my Carlton? That's hamdy if they do....   ;)

You should be fine with any cheapo for a desk, just be careful if you move something like a ladder, then the bars will bow in the middle. I inserted "U" section steel into my cheapo ones, beefed them up a treat.  :y

Yep, if they fit a Carlton, they'll fit the meega.

Time to look for a roofbox now then....  there's not much room for camping stuff in the boot with that gas tank there...  ;D

Can't you get all your camping stuff in the desk?  ;D

I thought the omega used gutterless roof bars, the reason I am asking is most of the searches I have done show it as using ones for gutters.  I didn't think the omega had them?

Cheers for that, shows how much I look at that area, they just don't seem as pronounced as the old style cars :D
