well something has gone with the timing chain not sure what yet but before i bother to strip it and replace is the engine a non interference or has it smashed my valves ?????
-
May be wrong but very few oil burners (across all the brands) are "Safe" so I'd expect damage :'( :'(
-
hmmmm i know the new bmw lump which came after this the m57 is a non interference. was just hoping that this one is as well.

take the rocker cover off and gently bar the engine over using the crank nut (22mm) if the cam moves its not the chain.
if it moves take the nut off the fuel pump and see if the cotter is still there.
you need to remove the belt and tensioner completly.
The reason I say this is mine stopped dead whist driving and the pump cotter had shredded :y

tried to crank the engine over watching the chain and it don't move it's def the chain.
