Title: Head Gasket or not....
Post by: mark.adams on 25 June 2010, 17:12:50
Well i have finally got the head off to find the gasket completely intact with no signs of having blown...
I had water loss with no visible sign of it going anywhere, overheating and complete loss of power.
It had all the symptoms of the head gasket having blown again, now i am confused.
I am going to send the head off for pressure testing, welding the corroded bits and skimming anyway.

would say a pressure leak in rad hard to see when its steam until it fully gose, but loss of power could be just down to the plugs.

Any differences in the appearance of the valves of any cylinder?

When ours went there was very little visual evidence, and the gasket was very intact, apart from the slightest difference in colour of a section of the top side of the fire-ring between pot 4 and the adjacent large water channel.

What was apparent though, was that the surface of the exhaust valves of cylinder 4 were a different colour to the rest.  Evidence of the coolant 'burning'.

Edit: Here's a pic of the head on the kitchen table  ;D:

That`s where they tend to fail

Pot 4 has definite corrosion between water channels but doesn't look as if the fire ring has been breached, i'll take a photo so you can see for yourself, although valve colour is different on pot 4 to the others

An excellent example of why good antifreeze, kept at the correct concentrations and changed at the correct intervals is important.  :y

I would say that would be gobbling some water.....as if the head is that state then the gasket material supporting the fire ring would be similar.....hence a breach
