Is this engine any good? and if so, for how many miles, if serviced properly.....?
Seen a 2.5TD CDX advertised locally, no mileage and pics not very clear, just wondered if it might be worth a look, tis on a V plate........ :)

Get a V6 on LPG :y

There is still a very tidy mini face lift MV6 near to me that I keep telling myself not to buy..... :D :D :D

Brilliant engine easy on derv especially after remap and goes fairly well.
I thought gas conversion killed v6 heads?

The Omega's heads are fine with LPG :y

Get it bought you know you want to. ;D

Get the diesel mate mines on 180k and going great now :y
-
Mines unchipped with 150k ish, very well maintained and goes like a rocket. 46mpg on motorway run.

If I got another 2.5TD - and I am tempted - it would have to be a manual this time. Trouble is, not many manual Elite saloons in 2.5TD version...

Make one ::)

I've never regretted buying my TD estate, never given me any real trouble. Apart from new glow plugs and thermostat, just regular service parts :y
Must keep the oil changed regularly, and keep injectors clean also. Essential also to make sure the cooling system work well also, can be a problem with silting of the rad.
As with any motor look after it and the TD should be good for easily 250k +
I may not be able to acheive that sort of mileage, it's coming up to 120k and running sweet at the moment :y
Mick ;)

Had a TD for 3 years and reckon it stands me at about £1000 total running costs - tyres, MOT's, spares... everything.
Great car and is now on 202k, 50k of which are mine.
Buy it :D
-
I'm now on 190k. 74k my use , pela pump to change oil every 5k, few city miles mostly suburban, did have to buy a rad, the only reason to change the car is I'm tired of looking at it ,or poor consumption 34ish don't believe claims of 40+.
But what to replace it with? Bimmer, Audi? Poverty spec is 3x times price and problems are a financial nightmare!!!!!

I think you would probably struggle to beat 34 with an Auto, my average with a chipped manual is about 36 but if I do a good run then 41/42 is the norm.
To be fair, 34 isn't bad for a 1700kg car.

With a TD auto, urban driving really does kill mpg. Fine on a good constant 80mph cruise though.

You're not wrong.. I was quite shocked.. Still, despite the shocking fuel economy, I think it's a shame the bodywork on mine isn't mint - because I can see myself keeping it for a fair while (assuming it doesn't rot to pieces around me ;D the dreaded tinworm is already in one of the rear doors..)

For the doubting Thomas :o - brim tank test on motorway 500+ miler gave 46mpg. Computer gave 46.9 ( ...good grief its accurate!). Urban she does suck it down a bit 24-32 mpg.
Unchipped manual btw.
edit: doors rusting at bottom edge and a few other places as well 8(

I agree display mpg is pretty accurate, it is on mine.
I get around 30 mpg around town easily. Motorway driving is easily over 40+, depending on cruising speed. With the caravan on the back I was returning up to 28mpg :y
Mick ;)

Using the 'brim the tank' method ........
Our latest un-chipped jobbie returns 34mpg running locally around here.
On a nice motorway cruise, well over 40mpg, though exact consumption to be confirmed.
Not calculated yet with the caravan in tow.
My former (now Markseth's), returns pretty well the same figures - and that's chipped.
However, that car achieved a disappointing 23mpg with the caravan behind.
For a near 2-ton car, the urban figures are pretty respectable IMHO. :y

That's what I was getting when it was chipped, hence I removed it.
Unchipped up to 28mpg, that's with a following wind :o and driving steadily.
Caravans gone now so may get it chipped up again :y

Still only getting about 26 locally, 33 on a run with my chipped TD. 97K, 90 of which are mine, had it 11 years now, 30k since chipping, and still on the original AR25 box.
Should I remove the chip and get a remap? Would this improve the mpg?
I do like the performance though, and I still love the car.::)

Hi All
My 1998 2.5D auto has similar figures to above.
Last April however I went on my annual pilgrmage to Teignmouth in Devon
Filled up before leaving home (South Wales). Reset the computer to zero. Once clear of the busy M4 around Newport, which had a 50 limit, I set the cruise control to 60mph and more or less did that speed all the way down untill I left the A38.
Achieved a fuel consumption of over 50 to the gallon.
Did same on way home. Fuel consumption for complete trip just over 52 to the gallon. Believe my computer to be accurate as it corresponds to fill to the brim type calculations.

That's about right for an auto! :'(

With cruise control set to 56mph driving a 100 mile stretch on the m1 on nottingham to watford with no touching of any pedals or changing speed my auto 98 does 55mpg

The miggy is the first car of mine I've actually wished had cruise control.. it's the only one I'm happy driving slowly enough to need it ;D

Reading all these posts, makes me think my '99 3.0 V6 estate is about the same consumption........low 20s round town, high 20s to 33 on a good run.
originally wanted a TD because of the economy, but it doesn't seem to matter what you buy, the consumption is about the same!!
(still want a 3.2 estate in black, though............when I've saved up my pennies...................)
-
I've had mine 3 years, chipped a little over 12 months (fun when you get the "boy racer" attempt to undertake you) and I really love the car.
I normally reckon on about 400 miles between garage stops although not empty (Usually refill at around 10 litres)...
No major mechanical problems, EGR blanked... The only irritating issue is the well documented hot start issue, but there is an easy fit module fix for that.
