I had automatic gearbox on. Turned out to be the cam sensor! Which is common although strange!

From what you describe I agree it could well be a dodgy cam sensor which will trigger the gearbox to go into limp home mode. This will give the symptoms of gutless performance. Not sure if the 2 litre is the same as the 2.2 but a read of this howto may also help with your diagnosis/repair. Should you decide to go for the cam sensor replacement buy a genuine GM one and not a cheapie' of ebay, they have a reported life span of anything between several months and a nano second. Have you had the fault codes read? IIRC the pedal trick may well work on your model. Post the results on the forum and the guys will advise you further.
They all helped me a lot when I had problems with my car.
