These really are a complete waste of time and space. I can't understand why Vx went to so much trouble to fit headlight washers in the first place (without headlight wipers - a double whammy!). I removed mine and all the associated plumbing then had the bodywork professionally filled and re-painted. The front end looks much sleeker now. :)

Cos they are a legal requirement for the HID lighting setup.
HID's do seem to be affected far more with dirty lenses that traditional bulbs. The light levels do seem to drop off as the lenses get dirty, I know a good blast of water improves my lighting in the winter.

Errr they are a legal requirement :)
By making it 'sleeker' you have made your car illegal to drive!
HIDs are affected by dirt a lot more, everytime i am driving the Elite at night and wash the windscreen, light output goes up.

wow , £40.00 :o
expensive
-
yea.. i never thought they would go over 15 pounds :(

Sorry they went in the dustbin, that's how much I thought of them - mine were slightly different to those on fleabay anyway. They were mounted in the trim piece under the headlight not on the bumper -ugly lumps of plastic :P
Now to address the legal issue - can you tell me where there is proof they are a legal requirement! Sounds like tripe to me - so what your suggesting is that ordinary headlights aren't affected by dirt.
Also, talking of what is legal - any modifications to the manufacturers spec. that isn't divulged to your insurance company i.e. wheel style/size change, body trim mods., exhaust change, suspension lowered, engine size change/mods.? :-?
Additionally, I have heard several people talk about upgrading lights to the HID type does that include fitting the headlight washer jets? I think the rain would be just as effective ;D
If Vx were serious about this they would have fitted headlight wipers.

Well they are worth £60 on eBay!

Pre-facelift under headlight, facelifts had them mounted on the bumper

Right here, with links to Goverment sites, shows retro fitting rules have to mirror production

Tripe huh? Ask yourself why every manufacture goes to the hassle of fitting washers to cars with HID lights, do you think they would bother if it was not a legal requirement?
If Vx were serious about this they would have fitted headlight wipers.
Washers are better than wipers.....also name one manufacture thats fitted headlight wipers after 1990's!
Given right mixture of screenwash, i find headlight washers on our Elite excellent, everytime it washes the lights at night, output increases by 30% easily. Yes other lights are affected by dirt, but HIDs are affected much more, hence the legal requirement for their fitment.

Once fitted to the vehicle it must have headlamp cleaning and self-levelling (which can be for the headlamp or can be in the vehicle suspension - some expensive estate cars have "self-levelling suspension" and that is adequate). Also the dipped beam must stay on with the main beam.
Self Leveling is also there to prevent dazzle...

Tunnie is right, Xenon equipped vehicles need headlight washers, every single xenon equipped vehicle sold in the uk has headlight washers, without exception and this is mandatory.
Wipers were only fitted to V70's and S60's until 2004 '54' plate and the L322 Range Rover from 2002 until the facelift in 2005. They then just changed to headlight washers which are more effective then wipers. I can't think of any other newish vehicles with headlight wipers fitted.
Having driven both halogen and xenon equipped vehicles, the light output is greatly increased when the headlight washers are used on xenon equipped vehicles. This is the case on Omega's, but even more so on some other vehicles, including the L322 Range Rover.
-
xenon beams run warmer, therefore attract dirt when 'raining', mandatory requirement in Europe, including us in the UK !

I'd rub the plastic down and get it spray painted, they are only small and should be easily covered with one of the little tins from a dealer :y

Tunnie - you havent seen my spraying - excuse the pun...
i did try and pop off the drivers side but it was a pain to get off, how are they easily removed?? bear in mind the scrappy has the car on the chassis so cannot get underneath....
Sorry to steal a bit of this topic!

they should pull of fairly easy, maybe look at a local body repair shop? Give them the spray can from dealer and plastic bits, couple of used fivers?

Hope you don't have an accident mate - your cars now illegal and you haven't told your insurer re your illegal "mod"- :o - strictly speaking you are driving uninsured!!

from what i know xenon is cooler than normal halogen.... but their light is afected from dirt on the headlights

mmm mostly correct. Wipers essentially got removed due to legislation about non deformable structure on the front of a car
HIDS run cooler, but the dirt film increases their dazzle effect, hence needing washers
and they are only required on vehicles with reference lumens of 2000 or more, so not essentially mandatory on all vehicles, although to be fair all manufacturers with HIDS/Xenons do tend to fit them

Simon is bang on the money!
Due to the intensity of the directional light through clear lenses, any dust or dirt particles on the lens will refract the light in various directions, potentially causing dazzle to oncoming traffic or vehicles in front (which dont have the auto-dimming rear view mirror ;D).
For this reason, the powerful washer jets are a legal requirement for vehicles fitted with this type of forward facing lighting.
Interesting how 'Mikes1670' stated he removed them because they were 'ugly'. For anyone who knows about cars, they certainly prove you own a vehicle with the option boxes ticked.
I can only agree with others, that when the washers are used, the visibility increases immensely. I am annoyed that they use SO much washer fluid. And, when the washers are in action, the forward lighting drops by a significant amount (if only for a second or two).
-
one other thing.. fitting HID 'kits' is actually technically illegal - unless you change the entire headlamp for one that is designed with correct reflective surfaces - as halogen lamps aren't. Whose going to find that.. god knows but there you go, it is actual making the car illegal fitting an aftermarket HID kit!

we've degenerated the discussion and got offtopic.. i'm still looking for nozzles so if anyone has them.. i will be here :P
