Title: hb valve
Post by: tidla on 26 June 2010, 21:29:44
got a slight leak from this im guessing,(coolant down the back of the engine/gearbox.

trip to oxford coming up and unlikely to get it fixed before then.

question is, do they give out or just carry on leaking?

(breather needs cleaning also as rocker bolt has a leak)

Had to change mine yesterday. I got the car home by putting the heater up high, not great in this weather, but if I turned the heater to cold it gushed out. Good job access is easy, not. ::)

Yep, big time. Have been known to leak for ages but when they go you`re stranded

Wouldn't just clamping the hoses going to and from the valve to each other with a little plastic tube and clamps stop the leak other than you might empty out the heater core.

Who needs heat right now.

Merci I am newbie!

If you`re going to go down that route, for the sake of 45 minutes you may as well change the HBV :)

By the time you get enough bits taken off to get access to clamp it .. you are 75% of the way through the job !!!

Change it.

no point cutting your hands to bits twice is there. do it once...sorted. :y

and don't forget your swearbox and of course a supply of plasters for your knuckles   :'(

Good luck, just a bit of calm and patience is needed and follow the excellent Maintenanace guide...easy peasy  !! ;)

as predicted by oof members, did not have time to do the valve before the trip to oxford..
pub carpark, large red blob of coolant..

topped the system up and turned the aircon off which slowed the coolant loss enough to get home.

read the guide in the maintenance section along with the comments already made, no mention of removing the wiper mechanism ( 4 screws ) which made the job pretty easy and accessable.

spring clip tool also helps a great deal.

no plasters or swear box required.

apologies for the poor quality pics.

worth an amendment to the maintenance guide?
