Title: Heads off- what gaskets/parts need to be replaced
Post by: kcl on 05 July 2010, 09:46:36
I'm going to waste some of my coming holidays by replacing the valve guide seals and exhaust manifold gaskets. I know I need at least following:
- valve guide seals (are they the same through out the V6 range?)
- head gaskets
- head bolts
- exhaust manifold gaskets

I replaced cam cover gaskets a while back, can they be re-used? Intake manifold/plenum o-rings I imagine are re-usable? Anything else? Is there some other things I should do or replace while the heads are off? Oil cooler is new-ish. Do I need to drain the coolant?

2x gaskets for the manifold to down pipe.
4 x Dowty washers for the coolant bridge.
1x O-ring for the coolant transfer pipe.

The camcover gaskets should be OK to re-use.

Thats all I can think of at the moment ;)

You wouldn't have the part numbers...  :)

Head gaskets -  Metal multilayer on the 2.6/3.2 with GM not being excessively priced

Head to manifold gaskets - GM

Manifold to front pipe gaskets - GM

Head bolts-  good aftermarket ones

Stem seals, - Again. never had any issues with aftermarket ones

4 dowty washers for coolant bridge - GM

1 water pipe to block O-ring - GM

Cam cover gaskets and inlet seals will be fine.

I would also consider re-sealing the oil cooler to block joint and the stat to blcok joint which will eman you need 4 oil cooler pipe seals (11076852 METAL COOLER O-RING) and some oil cooler sealent (93165267 SEALANT)

This thread should help give some guidance

Thanks guys, let's see if I can get the cam lockin tools, I will not even try it without them. If we are lucky, I think we might have some photos posted here about the project in late August
