Title: Can I remove the Secondary Air Injection system
Post by: Bionic on 06 July 2010, 09:21:07
Is it possible to remove, or at least disable the Secondary Air Injection system on my 2.5 Elite Auto?
If so, how do I go about it and what parts can stay and what can be safely taken off?
Thanks in advance.

all you need to leave is the solenoid iirc to keep the ecu's happy

the pump and pipework can be removed, just need to blank off the pipes in the exhaust manifold

Thanx Jimbob.
By the pipes I have to blank I suppose you mean the one across the front that is jointed directly above the aircon pulley?

When Mark removed mine while we had the heads off, Im sure he just left the 2 stubs of pipe sticking out of the exhaust manifold, folded over, crimped and welded shut.

What exactly are you trying to acheive?

Prob quite a bit of work to remove, unless you are dismantling for some other purpose.
If its just to shut the pump up, unplug it  :y

Its just that I am having to keep replacing the short piece of (should it even be rubber?) hose that joints the metal pipes that run across the front of the engine block. DLK told me that the system was not necessary too when he did my heads, so why leave  it? What else would make that hose joint blow regularly? If it is an easy fix I would rather leave it as origanal as I can.

ive heard of others doing that, sure its been talked about on here....

Cant remember the details off hand...possibly exhaust back pressure?

Thats what I checked first. Both exhausts are free and clear, inside the single tailpipe is a nice colour too, with just the usual very small amount of condesation water being emitted.

Could the the non-return valve in the pipework allowing fumes up the plumbing, or a partially blocked exhaust. If the system isn't working, might as well bin it and block the pipes into the manifold. be less to remove next time the cam belt is changed.

Either crimp and weld up, as said, or shove in a 15mm copper plumbing stop end to the rubber stub and tighten up the clip.

Hm, ok, I will get a couple of 15mm compression type stop ends and fit them. It is peculiar that it is only the ns rubber hose above the aircon pulley that is persistently blowing and the os one is fine though when they are both connected within 18" on the same metal pipe?

Still sounds like a blockage to me.
Have you checked the cats?

Had the full front system off and blown through by mouth just to check while it was off. Tried the centre sections the same way while it was seperated with the same result. All were dead easy to blow through and so presumably without any restrictions. The back box is brand new too.
Next job I supposse will be to try the one way valves wherever tyhey are situated. No doubt they will be arkward as all hell and typical of the mig!
