Title: Front struts
Post by: mrjimbo on 08 July 2010, 20:53:24
On the top of the front struts there's a rubber bush type thing, is there a bearing in there aswel ? My mate's just brought his 2.5 diesel round, he said he had a crunching/rubbling noise when he turns the steering wheel. It's definately coming from the top mount. Do these break up or fail or has he just been unlucky ?

Yup, there is a bearing in each one, and they do fail. You need to remove the strut to change, easy job but you will need spring compressors.

We left as it is at the moment, didn't take it to pieces in case it all fell to bits and couldn't get it back together again. He'll have to get a pair and do them both at the same time  :y

And measure the gap between wheel rim and shock body before removal to replicate the camber setting on rebuild. Then get it set correctly after. May as well change any slightly dodgy parts while it's in bits.

Seems ott, for greasing a baring don't it?

Sure it's not wishbone bushes failed allowing the wishbone to rub on the rear subframe bracket? Worth a look anyway IMO. :y

No 15, I think, cased in yellow and green plastic on mine, might get away with a re grease?

The noise is definately coming from the top mount. Do you know the part number for the bearing ?

I take it it's the bearing that fails not the rubber ?

Depending on price it may be worth swapping the rubber too? would be annoying to rebuild and find it needs other parts than the baring. But on the other hand i can only remember one instance of the top mount needing replacing on here, and that was due to a knocking at speed over bumps. :-/

Can't helper p number, sorry.

I have the same problem on my project  omega,i took the strut off, greased the bearing put it back on with no difference,i've got a doner car now to change the bearing over to make sure it thats. Also noticed  on robs picture number 3 was missing(a rubber thing)the creaking on mine seams to be the top of the spring/bearing area.when i get time i will be  swapping bits over to get to the root of the problem :y :y
