My speedo works for about a mile then it stops where it is, sometime for a day or 2 then works again.
I've removed instrument panel & cleaned contacts still the same. Everything else is working fine. Is there another sensor/ conection somewhere?

Sounds like impending ABS ECU failure. There is plenty on here about it. Do you get the ABS and TC lights come on as well?
I think that you need to be extra careful with a '96 car, IIRC there are several versions of ABS ECU and yours sits in the middle.
I'm sure that someone with more knowledge tan me will be along shortly to comment further.

1996 ABS ECUs more robust than post 98 ones.
I'd begin to initially suspect the speedo itself.
However a few tests...
When its not working, what is instantaneous MPG like on fuel computer? Does the odometer/trip still increment.
-
Hav'nt looked at mpg & trip counter is stuck. Speedo stuck at 20 mph at the moment.
-
Instant consumption all over the place going up & down also reading mph/h when stationary.
-
Hmmm, does sound like either the ABS ECU is outputting junk, or something is injecting duff voltages onto that connection.
-
Anything I can do to find out whats going on?
-
Personally, I'd start looking at live data of engine, gearbox, abs, mid, instruments, cruise, sunroof ecus via tech2, but accept you wont have that capability...
-
Your right there. My daughters taking her car for a service soon so I'll have a word with her guy to see if he's got tech 2. Don't want to get rid of but cost permiting I can keep it. Thanks for your help I'll let you know how I get on.
