Title: Aircon, coolant leak and sluggish accelleration!
Post by: Scott D on 13 July 2010, 03:26:09
It's all go (or no go) for my 2.5!

1st crisis as the weather is so hot is that my aircon is not working. Could this be related to my external air temp sensor not working? Put a new one in yesterday and still no joy. There must be a break in the wire somewhere, but the Haynes manual is no help for tracing it's path to the ECU.

Coolant is also disappearing at about a litre a month. No idea where.. No mayo in expansion tank.

Also engine sluggish under hard acceleration until the revs hit 4000 rpm and then it's off like a greyhound. Is that normal?

My previous car was a BMW E30. Lots of space around the engine (straight 6) to see what's wrong and to get to bits.

Any help graciously received  :)

Hi
Aircon may be as simple as low on gas.  Get a re-gas at Kwit-fit, I would not normally recommend having anything done by them, but in this instance they merely connect the car to an automatic machine so there is not much opportunity for them to get it wrong, and the big bonus is that if the a/c is no better afterwards there is nothing to pay!  If this doesn't fix it, go to an a/c specialist.

Coolant loss is possibly the heater bypass valve (HBV), common problem (reminds me, I must change mine!)

Engine sluggish at low revs sounds like one of the solenoid valves in the air inlet is stuck, or its vacuum connection has come off.

Hi Scott, regarding the lack of power check the vacuum hoses at the back of the plenum cover. With the a/c check to see if the clutch is engaging, turn it on and if the revs rise a bit then it could just need a re-gas, hth
