Title: Estate aftermarket parking sensors
Post by: P_Russell on 13 July 2010, 13:10:58
Anyone fitted any aftermarket parking sensors on an estate?  I'd be interested to see some pictures so I know where to drill.  Is there much behind the bumper?

I've done this successfully on a pre-facelift saloon but not sure with an estate  :-?

I'd be interested too, next on my list of "must do's..."

seems like a rare thing too, never seen an estate with them fitted. (wonder if that is because you can't fit them???)

You silly bugger!!!

My main problem is 2ft high concrete bollards when the estate is fully loaded and I have no vision at all out of the back window, and can't see the bollards via the side mirrors.

might try a reversing camera though, cheaper and better (maplins/costco/maccess...£50-ish.) and fit the camera in the top of my rear window under the stop lamp.

My problem is a 5 foot wife who physically cant see above the seat back!

Someone must have done it (or at least had the bumper off)....

Bumper is not a problem as its easy to remove, what you need is a photo of factory fit rear sensors on an estate to determine the correct positions for them

So there WERE factory fit ones.....never seen any.

Now if this was a F*rd, there would be dimples in the inside of the bumper to show you where to drill................

I can't remember the reasoning .... I think cos it wasn't the normal 'bullet holes' in the bumper.

Looks like in line with the tailgate shut gaps and the number plate swage ends.

Why not just tie some balloons on the bumpers, then when you hear a "pop" you know youve gone far enough!,,,,,,,,yep, i know the exit is over there. ::)

Forgive my simpleness ... but .. if its "electromagnetic" does that mean it will only detect magnetic materials .. ie  metal ?? how does it detect concrete, brick, plastic etc etc ??

At least with the sonic ones you KNOW it works by reflecting sound waves ....

:(

No idea Nige, but at work both now & in the past, we've used sensors on the lines of these  .... http://www.pepperl-fuchs.co.uk/cps/rde/xchg/great_britain/hs.xsl/143_induktive_sensoren.htm?tvp=tree&tvpv=fa&gclid=CLHbpojT6KICFRM_lAodFTsXwQ&rdeCOQ=SID-E60EE2BE-D0787A2A and some will only 'see' metal, but other would 'see' toffee/candy which was obviously none metalic.

Seems to be an easy enough job - although there's no sound on this clip for some reason;

Thanks Hotel 21 - just what I was after.  I can easily work from that.

It's an easy enough job to do (must be if I can tackle it!).  The ebay sets for about £16 are fine - I had a CISBO kit on my last one, carefully sprayed up the sensors and was still fully functional after 5 years.

Just have a spare pair of pants handy for when you attack the bumper with the drill and remember, you can't measure too many times!

Oh and use masking tape to stop the drill slipping  :y

That system constitutes a "perimeter sensor" around the number plate and agree, useless

I suspect that electromagnetic means its a radar based setup rather than electroacoustic like the ultrasonic types.

On my car i fitted a pair of sensor to the edge of the number plate.

These were proper GM accessory ones for a Corsa C, all i had to do was chop the plug of and hard wire it to the reverse light and earth. Have now been on for five years with a problem. Oh and te reason i fitted them is 'cause i had them laying around ::)

We also supply and fit aftermakers parking sensors which are bumper mounted and can be colour coded
These kits Trade at £70.55 + VAT and come complete with all the parts you need.

These also have an extra plug in the contol unit which will take a distance gauge, supplied at extra cost.

I'll see if a can get a photo of them

Cheers
Andy

As per Zulu's little videos, it seems to detect a wood fence ok..............
looks to be relatively easy to fit too, with no real drilling of the body.

Have looked at the website, has anybody here got FIRST HAND experience of this device to poo-poo it?? or are all the opinions made from just looking at it?

Have same brand on my MV6, been on around 5 or 6 years.  Had to replace 1 sensor....

Hi i fitted front and rear on my estate with a monitor  on the dash that tells you the distance and witch censer is near an object
i put the control box  in the left rear boot panel and run the main cable under the carpet to the front engine bay to the front censers
and the monitor  on the dash by left pillar and run this wire along roof lining behind door trims to  the rear
bumper comes off by 4 screws at top of bumper under rubber  and 2 screws behind fear wheel and side pull out by clips and and underneath more clips
there is just a  foam block in the bumper
put masking tape along the line of the censers so easy to mark instead of marking the paint
and put a cloth sheet on floor to stop marking the bumper when its on the floor
and i had to drill a hole behind rear bumper into the boot to run cable to the control box
 they cost me about £80
