Hi All,
My starting problems have become somewhat more manageable after a lot of cleaning intake, filters and liftpump in the tank.
Thing that has me baffled though, when I opened the drain on the old filter, there was NOTHING coming out of the filter!! No water and..........no diesel. Took drain plug out completely, still nothing. :-?
Anyone....?????

you need to turn on the ignition when you open the bleed screw as this turns on the lift pump.Just opening it causes a vacuum and you'l need loads of rags to catch diesel.
its far easier to take it off empty it then re-fit and remember to put fresh fuel in before you re-fit it :y

That's interesting, as the liftpump only works when the engine is cold. It's 34C here today and after 3 hours the engine is still warm enough that the glowlight doesn't illuminate and thus the liftpump doesn't get activated.

it should run for about 5 seconds then go off when ignition is first turned on. it only fills the fuel filter. once full it shuts off :y

That's quite normal given the current weather conditions!
The in-tank pump only runs for a few seconds initially when the key is turned to 'position 2'.
It stops once the fuel system is pressurised.
The injection pump then takes over.
I find that it's easiest to remove the fuel filter complete with it's casing from the inner wing.
Unscrew the old filter, then refill the replacement with diesel and refit.
Then refit the complete unit.

I think there is a misunderstanding here.
I have attempted to drain the old fuelfilter BEFORE unscrewing it. There was no diesel in the OLD filter. There should be diesel coming out of the bleedscrew when it is opened whther or not the liftpump is running, it's the only way to drain the filter from water etc.
I understand the new filter is dry when assembled until the system is pressurised and bled.

So you undo the bleed screw AND the drain but NO DIESEL??? It does sound like the bottom of the filter is completely blocked. Worth cutting it open to see just how bad it is, you need a new one anyway.
I would also fill the new filter with Diesel Magic or similar before fitting.

you won't get anything out if you only open the drain screw on the bottom the system is airtight on the top of the filter casing you will see a 10mm nut unscrew this and water/fuel will come out the bottom.
if nothing comes out take filter off as the drain is blocked.
I tip the filters I remove into a white pale to see how dirty they are.
I'm changing filters every 8weeks
