Hello everyone, replaced my ABS ECU, but while I was waiting for it coming back from BBA Reman I decided to do oil, coolant, filters, plugs (passenger side nightmare on v6!). After firing it back up it seems to idle not aswell as what it did beforehand. Incidentally, I have a drivers side exhaust manifold gasket leak which seems to have gotten worse while it's been standing. All the fluids are correct level, plugs torqued up correctly. Could the manifold leak be making it idle like this? Thanks!!

I too have a Drivers Side Exhaust Manifold Leak (I believe Gasket as it quietens down considerably (almost vanishes) when warm).
My idle fluctuates slightly, nothing that the ECU cant handle, so the car stays running. I'm thinking this is due to the manifold leak, but without getting it repaired (first job on the list come payday), I wont be able to tell you if it resolves it.
I've only had the car a week so dont know for sure if it idled perfectly before the manifold leak was apparent.

Mine is the same , it quietens down when warm (a bit), but under load it is still there. I was hoping it was the down pipe but just my luck it's not! More scut hands on the way for me! I also should've said: when doing plugs on passenger side I removed idle control valve for access. I lubed it with fairy liquid and put it back in, it was so awkward getting it in it's sticking out by about 1 to 2 ribs. It's still got a seal so I hope it's ok!

Did you clean and lube the idle control valve while you had it off?
-
No I didn't! I've don't really know what it does or how it works. I just removed it from the rubber/plastic holder and pulled the connecting pipe out and smeared a bit of fairy on when putting it back. Should I have done more? There is a sneaky little pipe behind it that goes towards the bulkhead that is difficult to see. I nearly snapped it when taking it off because I didn't realise it was there. there is already damage to this but still a good seal. I think whoever had the car before me has done this.

Bear in mind the engine ECU will have lost its' block learning when the battery was disconnected. If the rough running is not serious this may explain it and it will improve with use.
Otherwise, if it's a misfire, go back over the things disturbed and check all is well.

I had this problem just this week. After sitting for two years with no battery it had a bad misfire when i started it, but gradually it dissapeared, as Kevin suggests, i think it was 're learning' itself.
