Title: Sudden onset of severe engine vibration - coil?
Post by: jereboam on 20 July 2010, 09:38:50
Going on holiday on Friday!

Last night, a mile from home, everything started vibrating badly, and power reduced to lawnmower level.  Obviously (even to me) not getting 6 cylinders - more like 3.

No lights, no fault messages, everything else working OK, no fluid leaks, no smoke, not even the usual smell of burning (had this for 2 years, no idea, given up worrying).

Logic suggests that whatever supplies the HT to the plugs isn't supplying it to all of them at the moment.

Car in (possibly friendly) garage, as it's virtually undriveable - auto doesn't like no power, it seems.

Don't think it's going to get me to Cornwall unless they fix it. :( :( :(

Coil pack I would say....about an hour to change and around 30-60 quid for a new one

That's what the garage say, but their suppliers say there's a choice of 3 possible packs, and they don't know which it is without dismantling everything.  They haven't got all of them in stock anyway.

Pain! :( :( :(

Think yours will be oval plug Part Nş 90541062 - £123.69 on TC - you will get it cheaper elsewhere!!  If your crank sensor has an oval plug then so will your coil pack (almost certainly) - HTH mate. :y

Thanks for the info.  I'm completely in the hands of the garage, because I can't do the job myself and I don't have time to order the parts and locate someone who can fit them.  Once again, I'm going to have to pay whatever he charges me, becuase if I get difficult, and he doesn't fix it, bang goes my holiday.

He used to be very reasonable, but I'm sure he overcharged me (about double) for fixing the aircon condenser.  He's thinking more about his retirement than his customers at the moment.

Still, because of the holiday, he bumped someone else's car service, I suppose, so he could do mine.  Last time round, I was the one who got bumped to the back of the queue.
