Title: Couple of simple questions....
Post by: markm730 on 21 July 2010, 14:42:40
Don't wanna sound like i haven't got a clue but recently bought another omega and its the 1st time i've had an auto. There's 2 buttons that i don't know what they do, the sport button on top of the gear lever and the winter mode switch next to the lever. Unfortunately i don't have a manual for it and can't seem to get 1 either - its a w-reg 2.5 saloon(2000).
Can anyone stop me from telling my 10yr old that they are eject buttons for naughty kids !!!
Cheers ;D :y

is your manual.

Sport on top of stick lets it rev higher in each gear for sportier driving
winter button - snowflake, starts it in 3rd for slippy surfaces

Have a read here for full explanation :

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/andrew.reynolds983/Manuals/Omega2002Manual.pdf

But simply put .. "S"port button, holds each gear until the "redline" ... good fun but expensive on fuel and tyres. If yu want to be really "playful" .. select 2nd gear and Sport ... you have 2 gear car now.. 1st to about 50 second to about 80, you cna chuck it about country lanes like a demon .... mind you don't overdo it or cook the brakes ..:)

"Winter" button - snowflake..... car will pull away in 3rd gear from stationary, this is an attempt to avoid wheelspin on slippery surfaces. To get the best out of it you have to be smooth and progresive with the throttle.

HTH

Entwood, I never realised if you put your auto into "2" it would use first and second gear. I have a long journey tomorrow and will give it a try 8-) 8-) 8-)

you never wondered what 3 2 & 1 was for then?  :-/Stick it 1 and it will stay in first.

I thought if you put the gearbox into 2, it would stay in 2. I didn't realise it would use first as well. ;)

It limits how high up the gears it can go usefull if towing or have a heavily laden car when going up and down big old hills :)

Theory says that if you put the car into a lower gear at a speed too fast for that gear, then even though the selector is at eg 2 then the gearbox won't actually select that gear till it's going slow enough.
Any volunteers to test their auto gearbox?  ::)  ::)  ::)  :y

On change down it does exactly that ... I've used the gearbox a few times on long downhills when towing, and if you select 2 and you are going too fast it ignores you; brake to what it considers a suitable speed and it will change down to 2, you can then continue using engine braking very effectively.... just have to watch the revs and occasionally touch the brakes to ensure you don't over rev.

On a VERY long downhill stretch (8 miles) on the way back from Millau with the 'van on the back, I had it in third and was drifting downhill quite nicely .. 999 mpg on the readout, holding 55 mph....   after about 5/6 minutes I noticed the water temp was dropping quite quickly !!! Once we reached the bottom and I started to drive, it soon picked up again.

For those who might not know .. 999 mpg means the injectors are all closed .. you are not using any fuel at all, the engine is effectively not running. Makes good engine braking though .. :)

I suppose it would, I've never thought about that before.  :y
