I am so gutted , i have just finished a top end rebuild (25v6). on account of high emissions. All gaskets, valve steam seals, valves reseated, heads cleaned like like new, breathing imaculately clean, done 116k bores show not even slight wear, plugs, leads, the absolute full monty methodicly carried out, plus cambelt, rollers, tensioner ect, aux belt. oil, all filters, started at first turn of key, all lamps on dash as normal, em light normal opp, up to temp, fans operate normaly, no issues at all so really happy , ran it for five days. And then took it for MOT and left it already with temp at normal, when i went to collect it the guy told me he had to abort the emmision test because the temp gauge was off the scale fans didnt run and it was pumping out blue smoke like hell, now i have intermitant oil pressure and rattles to die for, i suspect this guy has been red lining it to heat up the cats and blown it, guys i could cry im so gutted, i had no recourse with the guy as i was not present and there where two of them working on it, apart from that it needed a new tyre, comments appreciated plus has any one got a half decent spare lump and a box of tissues

did you make a note of the milage when you dropped it off, could be that they ragged it around the block
-
Sorry to here about this mate :'(
But would imagine this will be hard one to prove :-?
Suppose they will blame you :(
-
Failed water pump?
Big sympathy BTW.
-
Thats not good. My M.O.T. tester lets you stay with the car, any problems with the test and he points out the issue and lets you have a good luck at what he has seen.
Hope you sort it quickly and cheaply... speaking of which.
...has any one got a half decent spare lump and a box of tissues
I have a 3.0 Mv6 engine here...

this car was working until mot , right?
you need to talk to a lawyer I think..
-
if you ran it for 5 days and could prove all was ok and woking fine you may well have a case. by the way how far do you live from the mot place? might seem a silly question but if it drove ok to the test centre then you are not at fault
-
I can share in this, 5 miles after doing new heads, the new cambelt kit let go destroying a weekends work.
It may just be one of those things, but sounds like the car could have been turned off sooner :-/

I always watch an MOT now. Ever since I took a car for MOT with an engine that had done 12 miles from a complete (rebore, pistons, rings, bearings, etc) rebuild, informed them that I wanted the minimum of idling to perform the emissions test only (power steering and brake servo not fitted) and to watch the gauges as it's not impossible that there's an air lock in the cooling system or other "bedding in" issues... only to find on my return that they'd left it idling unattended for an hour. >:(

car ran fine for five days, no issues atall, ive been around engines since i was i kid not much i cant handle for example i changed my cambelt without all the locking tool stuff, its easy if you set rollers and tensioner up correctly to start with, it comes out spot on first time long as you check and double check , took half hour to set up, rotate, check, rotate , check again no problem............ milage was the same as when i left it. mine was the last one of the day ,i suspect they reved it to max to heat up cats, the car had no sign of any smoke from exaust in five days, thanks for your comments guys

The fact that they let the temperature go off the scale tells me that they weren't watching it, or competent enough to spot the warming signs which must have been there (surely the coolant tank cap vented, for example). :(
What a nightmare. >:(
Hopefully you'll find another engine to drop in.
Cheers,
kevin

Best you can do is put the ball back in thier court and ask them what they are going to do about it.
If they are a decent outfit than they may offer something, but at the point it seems you have nothing to lose and something to gain.
Thier reputation is at stake if word gets arround, especially if the local trade get to hear things. ::)

I am not even going to pass comment...

I think you have answered your own question here mate I'm afraid :o
-
I would certainly take this up with the management of the concern where you had the car tested with a view of establishing just how this fault developed during the course of the test.
The fact that you had worked on the engine in the days leading up to the test without following the recognised procedures weakens your case somewhat it must be said.
I suppose the harsh lesson is, never leave your car unattended - insofar as this is possible.
MOT stations in Northern Ireland are all government operated and a driver doesn’t have the option of leaving the vehicle unattended. A system I would like to see here on the mainland.
-
Sorry to hear about that.
I'm sure that there is a sign at MOT test centres saying that they have to rev engines during the test and that by submitting the car for the test you agree to that.
A couple of years ago a pal of mine put his Nissan Serena in for an mot, the timing chain snapped during the MOT test and baiscally wrote the car off. He explored going through the small claims court but was advised against by CAB. :-[
-
Part of the reason I work on my own car so much is that I spent 2 years working opposite the Ford main dealer for Slough looking directly into their service bays......
-
they shudnt have redlined it for an mot test, i think they only need to take the revs up to about 3500 rpm for the emissions tests. Cud just be one of them things that unfortunately happened in an mot station, cud have bin much worse like being in the outside lane on a motorway when it went.
-
sorry to hear about your car. I thought it was only diesels that they had to redline. when i take mine for test i go on a bit of a run first get it nice and hot then drop it off and wait with it in the waiting area where i can see what they are doing.
-
Mot testers in northern ireland are trained chimps, most of whom are failed mechanics that couldnt replace a bulb properly without wrecking something, the mot is basically carried out by computers that you cant bargain with so the testers are glorified keyboard attendants that cant tell the difference between an antiroll bar droplink and a track rod end >:( its not a system you want introduced over there, also the system is ridden with dodgy testers that will quite happily accept monetary donations for blind eyes, passing your car using the previous cars test results. If i saw or heard an mot man revving my car anywere over 3000rpm i'd remove his right foot and feed him it. Also the smoke test for diesels was stopped a couple of years ago due to the amount of catastrophic engine failures and court cases. I'd hit them with a bill or a solicitors letter, it is negligence, they are supposed to be mechanics at the end of the day

It cant be proved one way or the other though can it? No doubt the garage will cover there backs n say it just happened in the middle of a test.
