Thanks for the reply jimbob but that only answers part of the question about normal running temps. If the fans dont cut in what could the problem be?

Cooling fans on all my petrol ones cut in about 100 degrees, usual suspect for no fan is fan switch on the radiator or a stuck thermostat. Run the engine to normal operating temp and switch it off, run your hand from top to bottom of the radiator and if its warm top to bottom its more than likely the switch down the side of the radiator is faulty. if the top of the radiator is cold, its probably the thermostat has stuck closed, but this would cause overheating within a relatively short distance driving. have you got excessive pressure in the cooling system or heavy water loss? On the worse end of the scale head gasket failure can cause your fans not to work as the radiator can become airlocked or filled with mayonnaise, but head gasket failure usually brings its own symptoms as well
