I know that tyres have been the subject of many threads, and that it seems to be a personal choice depending on budget.
My local independent tyre fitter has just quoted me the Avons at £350 for the four fitted, balanced etc. I did really want Michelin Primacy, but not at £140 per corner. I just wondered if anyone has experience of the Avons, and would like to comment on the price. CHEERS

Personally I have always found Avons to be a fine tyre having had them on many past cars, and on my current one. They have always given me great performance and reliability.
However some members I know will disagree with my experience, especially The Boy who I think used up a set in under 4,000 miles :o :o :o. But he uses tyres (and cars) up at that rate normally!! :D :D :D :D ;) ;)

Thank you Lizzie, comforting to know that you like them. ;)

They were ZZ3s or ZV3s (can't remember now). Awful. No grip and no durability, worse of all worlds.
Replaced with Nexen CP641 budget tyres, which offered superior grip in all conditions except very, very wet (then they were lethal ;D), and far superior durability.
Not a fan of Michelins either. Got them on the Worlds Worse Kept Secret. I suspect, due to lack of grip, they won't last too long either. Fortunately.

Pair of ZV5's only lasted 9000 miles on the back of mine .. and I don't race or rally !!! :(
Not having those again .. ever.

Far better to get an opinion from a tyre "user" than a driver who may just buy tyres to keep the rims off the floor. IMO avoid avons of any sort, they have a poor reputation in the bike world as well. Kumho ku31 ?

Or "abuser" in some case chris.
I have Avon Zv3's allround on my 2.5 and they really have to be provoked at times to break traction, but dont for get I have an Auto. of course turn the traction control off and I can make them chirp in the in the dry to a full on angry scream at 120mph + leaving a junction in the wet.
Yes like all drivers, well most at least I want and need to know thier limits, but unless there is a problem with the car or the car is constanly driven flat out then there should be no major isues with Avons.
Jamie has often commented on his ZV'3, whether he was bragging or complaing they only managed 4000 miles then I am not sure. In the same week, he also mentioned a few cars he had crashed and a few vechicles he had rolled over. Sometimes things have to be taken into perspective. No Avons dont cost £120/175 a corner fitted, and not everyone drives like Jamie. (Thats no disrespect to jamie at all) he drives a car hard and admits it, but in fairness a £60 tyre will in theory and practice will not grip ot handle like a tyre costing 2 or 3 times the money.

Sour grapes perhaps? ::)

I drive my 2.6 pretty hard at times and the avons seem just as good as the Pirelli P7's they replaced, I'm sure they wont last as long but cheap tyres never do

In the case of tyres I believe you get what you pay for.
Whrn I had my New Sylvia Turbo it was factory fitted fitted with Dunlop D86 tyres, and they were awsome. The rears were 100% slick on the inside and 100% new on the ourside after just 4000 miles of mashing the throttle to floor.
The dealer was completely bamboozaled and had to replace them and offered me a choice of BF Goodrich or some Goodyear NCT's as they could not get the factory fitted Dunlops.
I opted for the NCT's and in all honesty, I didnt realise what a difference tyres could make to a car.
BFG's I used to like them on the yank cars I have had, saying that I bought a pile of part used Pirelli P6 ZR rated tyres and went though those at the rate of 1 or 2 a week until I had used all 12 up, being low profile they aided in the cars handling and stopped it wallowing.
As said, you get what you pay for.

Certainly not a brag, just a warning/comment. They cost me good money :'(. That said, I was pleased to be shot of them.
I did wonder if it was because of the car (my old chipped tractor), but the surprising thing was that the replacement cheapo budgets (Nexen CP641) gripped so much better and outlasted my ownership of the car (so those tyres must have done 14k+ and were still good when I sold it on to Squealey).
But as I've always said, certain tyres suit certain cars. I am not sure I would put those Nexens on the MV6 - I need the confidence of very good tyres on that. Likewise, we've tried different tyres on the Rover 25 with disasterous results, so now stick to Pirelli P6000s on that. I'm the first to admit that, due to past experience on previous cars with P6000s, I wouldn't fit them on a wheelbarrow, let alone a car I send her to work up the motorway in....
I've had more than my fair share of accidents. Mostly my fault as well. I've crashed into trees, signposts, other cars, somebody's bungalow, kerbs, grass banks etc. Except the signpost incident, always due to rushing around in works time trying to make up lost time because some toffs refuse to put house names/numbers up*. Been there, seen it, done it, don't want to do it again. But never, touch wood, have I ever rolled a (road legal) vehicle.
* Upon quizzing, the customer, when eventually found and asked why they have no house number or name outside, respond with things like "Well, the postman knows where I am". Usual response "Next time, ask the postman to fix your rather phone then"...
