hey guys when i floor it at night i can see a huge cloud of smoke being produced in the lights of other cars, i dont think its noticeable in the day as i cant see anything but it must be there, i have tried a fuel injector cleaner but it hasent done anything so ive heard that adding a strong mix of acetone to the fuel will help clean the injectors and then adding a small amount in every tank will help keep the injecotrs clean, does anyone do this and if so what are their experiences of it, thanks
-
They all smoke it's just that at night you can see it
-
ok but this is a huge cloud, especially when moving away hard from the lights, then its like a smoke screen from the james bond movies
-
Had a P38a Range Rover that did exactly the same. (Same engine I believe?) Was just a trait of that engine. Had it all checked out and she was fine. Shouldn't worry about it matey.

I run a xantia hdi as a work car and by day no smoke is visible but at night it looks like it smokes like hell but most diesels seem to do the same
-
Try a tank of better quality fuel (not the supermarket junk), see if that improves it after a few miles
-
ok thanks for that guys, now i know my car is normal, however i dont want it to smoke at night so lets steer the conversation towards the acetone, would it clean the injectors and help keep them clean, improve the burn etc and reduce the smoke
-
Thanks TheBoy, who would you recommend, to test id run the tank very low then use the better fuel to see if it is better, and i can do it at night to see if its better before and after

Any 'premium' brand, eg BP, Shell.
I found mine used to smoke heavily on Asda/Tesco, far less so on BP.
For MOT smoke test, I always filled with BP (as thats our local station) before ;)

lol a good dose of acetone????? no way!! acetone in diesel should only be about 0.80cc per litre and thats high dose,
what acetone basically does is allow a better burn of the existing fuel, it does it by changing the surface tension of the fuel, i,e, you always get some heavier droplets sink to the floor of the nlet manifold and also in the combustion chamber, these generally get down past the rings, and contaminate the oil but some are sent out unburnt through the exhaust system,
this is how you see it at night but not during the day, as its a very fine mist mixed with diesel smoke, acetone actually changes the surface tension of the fuel allowing more to be burnt in the combustion process thus better effeciency and less smoke, have a link giving the ful story if you want it

Surely its not in the inlet manifold......

i see because super markets make their own petrol? i know my local tesco is serviced be the local murco refinery where as the local morrisons is filled by shell..............

Mine did this, is yours chipped, and do you use Sainsburys city diesel?
Mine still smokes only on hard acceleration. Better now I've replaced the standard chip. And don't use Sainburys diesel, seemed to smoke more with that in the tank.

lol well spotted glad you were paying attention!!! yes i was mixing up me engines there, obviously not on the diesel oops, :-[
-
nothing to worry about. :y

does anybody have any experience with this then, adding acetone to the diesel, does it actually clean the injectors and does it reduce smoke on regualr basis?
thanks
-
The best way to clean injectors is to strip them and clean them.

you obviously havent read my first post then? no it wont clean injectors, what it will do is give slightly better mileage
have a read here, usual disclaimers apply

Most pre common-rail diesels show this trait during night-time driving, especially when accelerating.
Seems like a hazy emission, especially when viewed through the mirrors with another car following.
Don't worry about it! :y

omegatoy i did read your post but i think taking the injectors out and then cleaning them and putting them back together in the wrong way is just an accident waiting to happen, yes i am looking for the easy way out but then again im not a mechanic :P

lol can understand that, it is a but scarey if you have never removed them before, maybe the acetone will clear them a little but nothing beats doing it the mechanical way, try it the acetone that is!!
good luck :y
