My car has now just done over 80000 miles so is due (probably overdue!) it's cambelt change. I have a mate that should be able to do the job for me.
For the cambelt kit and the water pump on ebay it's approx. £130 with delivery.
Anybody know a cheap supplier as my local parts supplier can't beat this price?

Have you or your mate got the proper cam locking/setting kit to do the job with ? If not dont even think about it. ;)

Seems expensive - try these people http://www.buypartsby.co.uk/timing-belts-and-kits-final.php?year=2000&Submit=Next&make=Vauxhall&model=Omega&sub=&eng=2.2000 - kit £56 +deliv. Usually Contitech/skf parts (OEM supplier). :y

Cam locking tool for the 2.2 is only around £5 - 6 IIRC. Have a Google or look on e-bay. Also, why not buy the DVD from the OOF shop & do it yourself, it's not difficult if you take your time & are methodical. :y

Hmmm, and I have the Estate booked in for service, cam belt, tensioners and MOT....

For some reason I assumed it was a v6, didnt look to see it was a 4 pot. ::) :-[

You can change the belt etc without a locking kit, provided the cams are aligned before you take off the old belt. If you are careful, it boils down to taking off the old belt, replacing the pulleys and tensioners and putting the new belt on. Provided it is still aligned then there should not be a problem.

That sound feasible if the cams didn't move on the valve springs. But they will. The plastic cam lock will hold both cams still relative to each. :y

I didn't :o no problem, my sad face was at myself and my plight, due to health, not your post :y

We must agree to differ on that point. Mine may have moved, but its going to have to move a good 6-7mm to be a cambelt tooth out. I haven't seen a V6 in the flesh but it seems to be more critical with them.

Surly you can cut the old belt in half, longways while still fitted, then push on the new belt and simply cut off the old one, everything should have stayed in place... :D :y

Thanks, guys definately helped. I'd probably not trust myself to do it though ;D

This sounds like one of those ideas which, because it is so blindingly simple, nobody has ever thought of before! (So long as it is only the belt being changed - and none of the rollers etc.)

And that's where the Devil is in the detail! It is rarely that the belt needs changing purely for itself, but far more likely the belt tensioner bearings are worn or the roller bearings are noisy, & it's recommended that the waterpump is changed as well as the roller & tensioner when the belt life (40K or 4 years) is reached, and Vamps idea would not be workable in that scenario unfortunately :(.
IMO, I also think you would have a B* of a job getting a new belt to stretch enough to fit without getting some slack from the belt tensioner? :-/ ;)

Seems expensive - try these people http://www.buypartsby.co.uk/timing-belts-and-kits-final.php?year=2000&Submit=Next&make=Vauxhall&model=Omega&sub=&eng=2.2000 - kit £56 +deliv. Usually Contitech/skf parts (OEM supplier). :y
Thanks for the link.
I have purchased the kit and the water pump, with delivery cost approx £95. Not bad at all :)
My friend has all the kit to do the job and is charging me next to nothing.

Can he be my friend too please?! ;D
And is the c£95 for OEM parts? That sounds like the best deal ever!!

Indeed. Certainly the hard way to do it, and it will still fail because 90% of failures are the tensioners and nothing to do with the belt.

My friend who is fitting them owes me a few favours as I've helped him out in the past ;)
