Title: X30XE Starting Issues - Help Needed
Post by: Elsheepo on 30 July 2010, 12:04:07
Some advice needed please…

Around 1,000 miles ago I had to replace the crank sensor, since then up until very recently everything has been fine and the car purrs like a kitten.  I also replaced the battery just after (in fairness it was old, but I think the constant trying to start it before replacing the crank sensor sealed its fate!) this.

The car doesn’t get much use as it is only our second car, so a few months have passed since the crank sensor episode.

A couple of weeks ago I noticed that when starting the car from cold, the rev’s would hold at around 2,000rpm at idle and even when up to temperature, would not drop below this until the engine had been stopped and restarted again, at which point it would settle back to its normal idle speed of around 650rpm; other that that the car would start fine.  Then last week, the symptoms changed to not wanting to start randomly as follows.

When starting, the engine turns over and over for about 10-15 seconds before firing, at which point it coughs and splutters (I’m guessing this is because I will have flooded the engine by this point?), to life.  After a few seconds once this has cleared, it settles down to a normal idle and purrs as if nothing has happened and then drives absolutely fine.  To clarify, once the car has started, it’s absolutely fine.  If I then stop once it’s been running and restart within an hour or so (i.e. if the engine is still ‘warm’) it starts first turn of the key; however the following morning it’s back to dodgy starting again.  Curiously although this is most defiantly now an established pattern, it does occasionally start OK as it did this morning (and it has not been driven since Wednesday).  I’m not 100% sure but I ‘think’ it is better on cooler mornings.

I have just done a paperclip test and the only fault code flagged apart from the usual 12 and 31 is 15 which according to the list is Coolant Temperature Voltage High.

So what could be the issue?  How do I fix it!

Thanks in advance.

No, it wasn't a genuine Vaux one although Bosch from memory, I installed it myself so happy with cable routing and all.

Replace the temprature sensor, or at least check its wiring. Maybe that the engine management thinks the motors warm so it wont enrich the mixture when cold.
