Title: Fuel Pump failed
Post by: richard on 14 July 2010, 10:47:11
Hi Gents

My miggie has just given up the ghost.

Its a 2.2 LPG 2003 118k.   Runs ok on LPG but now nothing on petrol.

AA says the fuel pump is not working ?

Thoughts ?

Is it difficult to change  as I cannot find a how to ?

Thanks in advance.

The fuse was physically checked or did he just whack a meter on the pump connector

Are you saying that you have power to the pump

The AA man said that there is power to the pump but he could not hear it spinning

had this on a couple of lpg,d cars of mine, anwer was to remove the connector and use wire to try to run the pump backwards for a very brief moment,(just flash the conections basically) then connect the correct way with the jump cables to make sure it runs, :y

Got a pump and filter and a willing mate.

Took cover off tank and checked again and we can definitely hear the pump so abandoned the job.  Runs on gas but not petrol .. it just dies as if no fuel..

messing about and it started to run ok on petrol just left it idling on petrol nice and smooth and then it just switched back to really lumpy and stalled.

Help me !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! beginning to hate the miggie ( Love her really)

If it runs on LPG, why are you worried about Petrol?  ::)

When was the fuel filter last changed - might be blocked ??

Are all the fuel lines ok - its not sucking in air at all ??

Have you tried disconnecting a fuel pipe and using the pump to pump through .. that would check the the pump is picking up fuel OK.

Check the Fuel Pressure Regulator .. it might be sticking shut.

about all I can think of right now ....

UPDATE

replaced fuel pump and filter now ticking over but sometimes dying and when trying to drive it feels like i am towing a elephant !!!

LPG still ok.

Could it be too much REDEX as I popped some in thinking it would help ??

Thanks anyone who can help

Sorry, good point, sounds like the pump was fine then. Is it worth giving all the fuel lines a blast of compressed air to make sure they are clear?

AHHHHHHHHHHHHH !!!

so its in the garage and now being told that its an ECU as no signal to the injectors. !!!

It starts but runs very lumpy on petrol  all ok  on LPG though

It's not the ECU.

If there were no signal to the injectors it wouldn't run on LPG as the LPG system relies on the injector signals from the main ECU.

Possibly it's something in the LPG system but I would question their diagnostic capabilities, TBH.

As I recall, this car has always run poorly on petrol and has been getting worse. I remember we looked it a while ago...

No signal to petrol injectors would be a sudden thing, and VERY unlikely to affect all 4 injectors at once.

It sounds to me like something in the petrol supply side has been gradually failing. Perhaps the pump is no longer able to supply the rated fuel pressure and has been gradually dying, the FPR is not regulating the correct pressure any more, filter or injectors getting clogged perhaps?

I know some of these items have been changed but this is the line of diagnosis that needs to be followed, IMHO.

If you'd like to bring it over sometime I'd be happy to have another look.

Might be better to let Kevin have a look before any (more) parts are ordered? ;) :y

That can easily be checked by bridging the two contacts so it runs continuously. :y
