Hello All,I'm thinking of getting a Pela oil extractor, (haveing now to now to look at old codger tackle :'() can anyone tell me what roughly is the amount of oil that will remain in the sump after useing the dipstick tube to vent the oil away? Is there a direct access path to the base of the sump? Never had the sump off a V6 although most other engines that I have had off in the distant past it would I think have been ok.Any info much appreciated :y :y

If the sump plug and oil filter are removed, and the car raised slightly, then surely ALL the oil will eventually drain out?
What are the benefits in sucking NEARLY all the oil out from the top?
-
I can't tell you how much would be left but if you can no longer get under the car for physical reasons then if you are concerned about some old oil being left in and mixing with the new, why not refill, run for a while and then extract and refill with new.
Might sound a bit wasteful but if you can get hold of an oil deal(5 cans for the price of 3 or whatever) and you can use the old oil for other things then not too bad and still cheaper than paying someone else to do the job!

I've just re-read your post and am now beginning to understand... Do you find it difficult to crawl about under cars, nowadays?

I shouldn't really comment on these as I have never used one. I am of the opinion that oil should be at operating temp and allowed to drain freely for half an hour, that way you get all the sludge out. I expect that the dipstick goes down into the deepest part of the sump, and I suppose you could pump most of the oil out, then give it another go every ten mins or so. I suppose I am concerned that as soon as you hear sucking noises you would pour the new oil in, while there would still be actually quite a lot of the oil crud still draining. I can see how it would be easier to change the oil with one of these, but to be honest it's a doddle of a job using the sump plug.

Quite often use a Pela extractor, as do a lot of "short" changes. Does leave about a pint in the engine, but that doesn't matter too much if you do as I do and put the car up on a block about 4" (front wheels) and leave it overnight. THEN try and suck out as much as you can, OR you can suck out oil and leave filter off for a couple of hours on blocks. Either will do nicely.

It's better than nothing, because at least you'll be replacing old oil for new.
In an ideal world, undoing the sump is better because the flow of oil takes any crap/debris out with it.
Maybe get it done the "proper" way now and again, but use the Pela extractor in between? :y

Sixstring seems to have it sussed, I would be happy doing it that way. I would hate leaving a whole pint of the worst oil behind though. I suppose if you have trouble getting under the car then this is your saviour. :y

I've got one of these, and the first time I used it, I removed the sump plug afterwards to see what came out. Nothing.
Think I even raised the front of the car a bit, and still nothing.
I think the negative propaganda about leaving behind sludge etc is utter nonsense. If said sludge won't be picked up by a tube tapping against the bottom of the sump, I see no reason to suspect that it will magically get up and flow out of the drain plughole. Just my opinion. :y
N.B. Not all sumps are the same, so don't know how that may affect things. Ours is a 2.0 with the single-piece sump.

N.B. Not all sumps are the same, .....
Smart Cars don't have a (factory fit) sump plug, so unless you buy a copy sump pan with a drain plug fitted, then a Pela - or similar - is the only way to get the oil out.
I suppose you could turn the car upside down ::) ::)
-
Don't forget some Omega owners have sump drain plugs that are shot and might need helicoiling if you got them out!

I think a lot of modern Mercedes are the same, too.
And you could probably flip a Smart easily enough.. not sure about an Omega, though ;D

Ah,thanks all, things are much clearer now,Can't beat this forum for enlightened tips, certainly a lot of good thinking members. Now haveing a Pela for sure,Like the idea of doing an oil extraction then removeing the plug to check the amount left, that gives me my answer, so simple! why didnt I think of that? I know why. So no clever answers to that!!Its not that I cant work under the car I still can,but not getting any easier though, it's just that I now find it messy. I still use an old sink bowl as a drain pan, then pour in to the empty oil container ready for the tip disposal point. Should be able to use the pela to ship it to the tip disposal tank direct.I've used a certain O/40 Fully Synthetic oil on all my motors for the last 15yrs, and change at a 1/3 interval when the oil still has some clarity on the dipstick, Some will say it's a waste to use a performance oil on a miggy so extravagantly, but I'm still waiting to do my 1st breather clean out, or see any sign whatever of mayo, + on the odd time I floor it,the oil hopefully gives that extra protection.I've always checked the drained oil next morning for nasty sludge when pouring it out of the bowl and never had any thing to worry about, I will lose this check, but I will do a filter change every other change, and do a sump drain plug test then. So there it is, thanks to all your super input,I'm sorted! I think I'll have a tidy, spill free, clean efficient engine oil change system, so down to Machine Mart tomorrow :y :y :y

Yeah, sorry about that, it's easy to take for granted, being relatively young and mobile...

No worries, you go for it and enjoy while you can, a good tip is look after your chassis, there ain't no grease nipples for when arthur arrives, I'm still Ok just takes me longer to handle a spanner or driver but nowt's beat me yet :y :y :y

what a good idea i too am going to purchase a pela from my local machine mart as gettting under the car is a problem to me too
