Title: Delaminating windscreen?
Post by: GaryBC on 11 August 2010, 09:45:59
The lower corners of my screen have a strange internal discolouration - best described as having a sort of 'smoky' look.

See if you can make it out from this pic.....

Any ideas as to what the problem could be? And is it something I need to be concerned about?

Incidentally. Anybody know what a Laminator is used for? :-/

one of our old screens did that, was a cheap rac screen.

not long later it cracked, so was replaced.

Mine's the same at the very bottom, that's an RAC screen too.

Mine's still the original screen - 10 years and 185k miles old!

Is it worth getting someone like Autoglass to take a look at it?

This looks like moisture getting between the laminations and from what I understand, a replacement screen is the only fix.

I don't think it's an MOT issue unless there's a certain area/percentage of the screen affected.

I wouldn't think it would interfere with the structural integrity of the screen. :-/

I doubt the MoT would be interested as it isn't even visible from the cabin - so it's not interfering with vision.

For that reason I doubt my insurance would pay (and I'm sure not going to call them to ask as they'll probably log it as a 'claim' and hike my bloody premium!).

So until and unless it develops into a crack I guess I'll just have to put up with it.

Ta everybody!

My last Mig passed 2 MOTs with a screen in this condition. So its nothing to worry about IMHO

I've seen a few similar, all have been original screens. Don't know the reason but have never seen in any other cars  :-?

That's weird.... I was just this minute contemplating whether it is worth the hassle of removing the front screen from my Mv6.

What are they worth, and are they worth any more with the blue strip across the top, I wonder???

I have the same, bottom corner passenger side. Moisture getting in via the roof run-off in the very corner. Stopped it getting worse by oozing  - "Captain Tolley's Creeping Crack Cure" around the area and topping off with clear silicone sealant.

Ebay or google it - it's much used in Yachts... magical stuff.

S'funny tho I found a wee pool of water on the passenger mat near the seat after rain yesterday night with no sign of ingress on door, sunroof or headliner. Water is a pain, much prefer electricity!

I'm sorry Gary but I cannot add anything to what others have said about your screen.

However, tell your son I love that joke!! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D :y :y

One thing you can do as well as sealing the edges as mentioned to prevent further water ingress, is to clean the area with meths and stick some 2"wide black pvc tape over the affected area and then trim back with a stanley knife along the line of the black edge of the screen.
I did this on my last mig and if you take your time and do a good job it makes for a very acceptable, long lasting (and cheap) alternative to a new screen :y

If you have windscreen cover, why not just make the screen 'devolop' a crack yourself?

I was once told to "never put in an e-mail anything you'd rather not hear read out in court"!!  ;D ;D ;D

Come to Leicester City and drive over our roads. Any weakness in a screen will soon go like the Autoglass advert. You can also drive close behind any truck carrying gravel, its almost guaranted to pebbeldash your screen. Leicester City potholes are the probably the biggest and widest spread in the country!
'Developing it' yourself is very dodgy and not worth the risk!

Quite right Bio 8-) beside being immoral, this behaviour leads to a culture of 'try anything on if it leads to potential benefit' becoming the norm rather than the exception :( :(

I couldn't agree more - and it's not something I'm considering!!
