Title: Feels like my wheels are falling off
Post by: Road Hog Mad on 18 June 2010, 17:46:15
Ride quality is poo, it feels like my front wheels are going to fall off.

Obviously my wheels are securely fitted, it has felt like this after its last MOT (unless I am imagining it).

It's the 3.0 MV6 so I will accept that it is a firmer ride than an Elite.

I did put higher profile tyres on it to try and soften the ride, initially it did (unless I am imagining it). :)

As well as the above and in a post a few months ago I mentioned that when braking it makes a 'mmmmm' sound, but only when under hard braking. That is still happening. The 'mmmmm' sound happens for example when braking some what normal from 30mph to 0mph, the last 10mph makes the 'mmmmm' sound.

Any ideas or should I just go back to walking?  :-?

Its going to be difficult to know what it could be by written description to be honest.

But with a bit more information, some of us could throw some ideas your way to help you out ?.

Out of curiousity:-

1. if you hit a bump does the front of the car suddenly want to change direction.

2. jack up each front wheel, and rotate it by hand and listen to see if there is any noise coming from the centre of the wheel (hub).

3. have you had the tracking done by anyone recently.

4. are the wheels damaged on the front, causing them to run out of true (buckled). Could always try swapping front for rears to see if there's any difference (costs nothing  ::) ).

There could be a number of things that you'll need to check, and with a bit of luck someone may have an answer, which points you in the right direction (sorry about the pun  ::) ).

Is there anything else you can tell us, or anything you've done recently to the car, that before it was okay ?.

Hope it helps, and a starting point.

1. When driving fast in to a corner if you hit a bump in the road the steering
would wobble slightly but I would think that is to be expected.

2. When parking up the other day on the kerb, I turned the steering wheel to level
up and it creeked and groned a little. Not jacked it up yet.

3. About 18 months ago (pulls to the left slightly, before and after tracking).

4. They don't appear to be they are wearing even.

I changed the wheels from low profile to higher profile to somewhat try and soften
the ride.

Any chance you could post a photos of the tyre treads, may help with giving a bit of a clue ?.

Member Darth Loo-Knee isn't far from you looking on the map, maybe worth Pm'ing him to ask if he could help, as he's one of the resident mechanic's on here ??.  Not saying he will, but maybe worth a shot ?.

Creaking needs investigating, wishbone bushes fail allowing the wishbone to rub the sub frame bracket by the rear mounting, among other causes.

Usual approach here i think, rectify any suspension or steering faults, full geometric set up for camber caster and toe, fit new tyres.

You'll notice at no point does this process involve "tracking"!

That tyre has inside edge wear, going by the pic.

Check wishbone bushes for cracks splits rips etc, replace if needed, set up, ESP camber

I agree... And, in addition, looking at the surface rust on the wishbone they aren't exactly new so would be the first thing I checked :y :y

Well, they may be ok, but the odds are against it, you need to inspect the bushes for cracks rips and ware generally, not likely they where
1fitted correctly
2 lemforder
3 set to the correct camber angle
Its possible it just needs setting to 1 degree 10

Diagnose first,then rectify.

Also the handling won't behave until those tyres are changed due to the wear. So it needs sorting or it will continue to eat tyres.

Hmmm... tyres are still the same, not eating tyres.

Will get it aligned when I get some money lol.

You might also consider going to Fleet Fit in Loughborough Tel: 01509 272785. Cumberland Trading Estate, Loughborough, LE11 5DF.

They are closer to you and have all the settings from Wheels In Motion....they know each other. I went there and received a great value top-notch service.

Cheers

The sipes are totally worn off the inner edge of the front offside tyre, so defo a problem there? Also, unless it's my eyes or the camera angle, the tyre pressure looks a bit low in a few of the pics? :-/ :y

tyre pressure fine, just the angle it was taken at.
