Title: Driving without MAF
Post by: Omegafantasy on 16 August 2010, 18:04:04
Hi all!

Seen several threads around where people have tried driving without the MAF connected. I tried this myself, just to see how it would respond, but I get quite different results from what I've read in mentioned threads.

- The engine won't idle for more than a couple of seconds, I have to use the pedal and keep it above 3k rpm or else it will stall.
- I have close to no power for driving and it shakes and fights me constantly.

My conclusion: No MAF = no run. Is this normal or is there something else that is very wrong? (M2.8.1 system)

Ran mine for a week with MAF disconnected whilst waiting for a replacement - no problems.

Had symptoms like yours - but my engine cut out - trying to restart it would fire and die as soon as I touched the accelerator.  Tried it with sensors disconnected (first ICV, the MAF).  As soon as maf disconnected, fired and ran OK.  Reconnect MAF car fires but won't run.  New MAF sorted it.

Yep, think I read your thread about that.

I find this strange  :-/
My car is driveable with MAF connected though, but not really quick (ref. this lengthy depressive thread (http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1274376988)).

I took mine out for a spin a while ago with the MAF disconnected and it is far more responsive, accelerates quicker and kicks down the box quicker, definate improvement

I'm puzzled.. Did another test to show a friend what would happen if you drove without the MAF, but got a completely different result this time. Ok, it wouldn't idle for long, but when driving I couldn't feel any difference in performance at all  ::)

With MAF disconnected it should not be better as it defaults to a compromised map....if it is then chances are its goosed but live data tells all

Ok.. Shame I don't have a spare MAF around. Got plenty for X20XEV though, but reckon they're not the same item.
Live data here (http://omcoslo.com/bil/livedata_wide-open.xls) by the way.
