Title: "Bang" when changing down a gear.
Post by: Road Hog Mad on 15 August 2010, 18:01:36
Omega AUTO 3.0 MV6 X Reg.

Seems when driving around town and the car going from 3rd to 2nd goes with a bit of a bang, either that or it is coming from the rear.

I was going to say accelerating 0-50 is nice and smooth, which it normally is but today it decided to stick in 1st gear longer than normal and then bang up to 2nd gear.

It does all of the above at least twice on a 10 mile around town trip, so its not major but maybe something is developing.

All the gears work if you select them manually and as said is normally smooth.

Never had the chance to check the auto box oil as I would suspect this first but I am sure these are sealed for life and there is no dip stick apart from me.  :P

I have a donor car, a 2.5 V6 Estate Auto T Reg. 146,000 Miles. Presuming anything can be taken off that?

EDIT...and to add, it only does it warm weather lol.

Could be your diff, or the drive shaft.

I'd get underneath and inspect the bolts on the drive shaft, and maybe with the rear wheels off the ground, whilst getting someone to change through the gears, inspect / listen for anything obvious. ;) ;)

I once had a similar problem on a brand new Cortina; the prop shaft had not been bolted up at Ford's and was about to fall off!! :o :o

Is it putting the autobox warning on the mid when it thumps?

No warnings, I'm having some new pads fitted soon to see if it stops that weird nose when braking so I'll inspect the rear of the car.

Always helps having a friendly mechanic who will let you go under the ramp and who only ever charges me trade price for some reason.

Think I'd be starting by checking the fluid level in the gearbox myself.

Engine running, take out the filler plug in the gearbox and fill with Dex3 till it just starts to run out.
Next step would be a change of fluid and filter.
Oh and the box in the 2.5 won't do as a replacement, you want an AR35 from a 3/3.2 not an AR25 which is what the 2.5 comes with.

How many miles has it done since the last gearbox oil change? Needs doing about every 80 k less if driven hard or towing. It may, just may be the (dreaded) thrust washer disintegrated. If it is you will find the pieces in the G/b sump.

there is a good how to change the oil inc discount on the gaskets and filter on the forum maintenance guides.

Might just be as simple as needs gearbox oil level checking. My brother checked his peugeot today and ONE teasponful came out. Again there is a how to on the site. No dipstick I am afraid.

either way both are good preventative maintenance :y

I was thinking along the lines of a gear box oil change, maybe someone on here can give me a price? :D

The reason I suggested the donor car was I thought something that changes the gears up and down was wonky and the other gear box thing would swap over, or maybe I have had too much to drink.  :D

To my knowledge it has never had a gear box oil change and the clock reads 141,000!  :o

I am open to offers for someone to service my box and cash to be paid, I live in the Manchester area.

I would do myself but don't really have access to a ramp for the time it would take to do it.

You can do it on ramps/axle stands mate it's just messy.
Parts are around £60-70 and filling is a lot easier with a pump up garden sprayer.

Would be ideal on a proper ramp, it needs doing before it gets any worse. I don't want to folk out for a new gear box.

No access to ramps so would be happy to pay someone to do it.

would the slight delay in gear change and then the bang say it could be the loose diff?

Don't see how a loose diff can delay the gearchange mate, more likely an issue in the box itself.

Will check first and then sort an oil change

Couldn't the friendly mechanic who only charges trade help?

That sounds like your solenoids inside the gearbox giving up. Happened to me about two months ago on my AR35. We changed all the solenoids, a good fluid change and it is a good as new  :y :y

Any pictures of where these are and how much?

I will get the autobox oil change if anyone fancies doing it on here, obviously I will travel from Manchester and pay cash.

Will do the oil change, solenoids and something else someone said.

Its a sump off job. Have a look here - - > http://images.omegaowners.com/downloads/Autobox_Docs/4L30E_Article.pdf

You want Figure 2 parts #307 #303 and #323

If a breaker on OOF doesn't have any then these guys can help you with the solenoids http://www.belvoirtransmission.co.uk/

thanks for that, the boy suggested a new gear box if the solenoids are playing up, I don't know if they are though it is just what other forum members have said.

My bets are on just an oil change to which I have asked if  a forum member will do it and I will pay cash, travel there etc.

By 'new' I meant 'new to the car', ie a known good 2nd hand one.

Personally, on a V6, I'd take the hit and change the ATF, and if that didn't cure, pop on a 'new' (to the car) box.

If you want to do it on the cheap, 2 cans of Comma Dex3 from Hellfrauds, and some instance gasket.  The filter can be cleaned.

Oh, and bits of plastic in the front sump is a bad sign ;D ;D ;D

Ideally I would like for someone to do it cheap but on the other hand I would like a proper job and know it will last (not a bodged job).

I had a similar bang when going round corners and it was changing down or up, changed the ATF and it has been a dream since similar miles on mine too!

TBH you couldn't pay me enough to do this job again especially without a decent ramp, not too hard just unbelievably messy ;D
