Title: uh oh - 'something' is on the way out
Post by: harpersimon on 15 August 2010, 17:31:19
Was changing the oil today, to swop back to some good stuff from having a bit of a flush - anyway thats all done, also disconnected the SAI while under there - silence! Bliss
but.. now I Can hear a similar pitch whirring from sort of behind the cambelt cover. Seems louder on the left side of the engine (looking at it from front) - is the Water pump behind there somewhere.. some other sort of idler? If I was a betting man, it sounds like some sort of idler bearing on the way out.. with a slight rattly sound also.. hmmmm..

I'd be having the timing covers off and budgeting on a timing belt kit if it was me, also wouldnt be driving the car, the noise aint gonna get any better, lucky stars should be thanked you found it early enough to save it. Water pump can be checked by taking the alternator belt off and running the engine briefly to listen for noise but only run it for a minute or two as there wont be any coolant circulating in the cooling system, this will also rule out alternator, pas pump and aircon pump (if fitted) as they wont be driven with the belt off, if the noise is still present with the alternator belt off then its off with the timing covers!

Sounds like it is the aux belt tensioner pulley. Top left of the aux belt run. Easy way to prove it is something aux belt. Make a note of the way the aux belt is run then detension the belt by using a spanner on the aux belt tensioner pulley. It moves away and lets you slip the belt off. make sure it is out of the way. Start engine and if noise has gone then..... Don't run the engine for a long time like that as you need the aux items.

Run the aux belt pulley by hand. It maybe sounds rough. They are easy to change and not expensive. However if you want you can try to repack the bearing with suitable grease.. Carefully prise the grease seal off and pack and replace.

Has your cambelt been changed in the last 4 years OR 40,000 miles out of interest?

thanks - I have a sneaky suspicion its something in the cambelt idling region.. not the Aux belt stuff as I am sure the sound is coming from behind the cover. Mentioned water pump as I thought it was driven from the Cambelt to be honest - I will slip the tensioner off the Aux belt and run it for 20 seconds - will easily tell if its gone or not then - but am fairly sure I am looking at a cambelt.
I have no idea when it was done last, been on my list to do for peace of mind. Previous owner told me 105 K ish as he thought it needs doing at 100k (!) and I am at 109k now  but I have no paper proof as he hasn't 'forwarded me the reciept from the garage that did it yet.. not holding my breath on that)
anyway I  did plan to get it done, when I had some cash, this might have speeded up my plan!

Get it done, timing belt kit is wayyyyyyyyyyyyy cheaper than engine rebuild, bent valves do not aid compression, or grey hair!! ;D ;D

Even if it turns out not to be causing the noise, get it done quick. If you dont know when it was done then it needs doing. You play russian roulette with the engine otherwise.
Make sure its done by someone who has the correct locking/setting kit and knows what they are doing. :y
If you dont have someone local who you know can do it properly, it might be worth dropping a PM to Darth Loo-knee. ;)

Thanks - have sent some mails off to local VX indys - there is a good one down the road from me in high wycombe.
Less anyone else wants to come over this way and do it for me :-) ??? I don't know anyone really (other than I know Elite Pete does them based on his sig, and was going to drive to Cheshire for it - but that was before I was hearing noises!

As Elite Pete says, try Darth Loo-knee, I reckon he'd do a better job than any garage, plus you will learn by watching him.

Obviously, he will bring his Rik Astley CDs....  ;D ;D ;D

He has been PM'd :-) thanks guys.
Local indy wants £378 including the Vodka and Tonic - not that bad I suppose!? half of that is labour and £60 of it is VAT!
