Managed to find a 2nd manifold and other spares for £15. Bought new gaskets too so will be swapping it over in the next day or 2, is there any sequence to doing up or undoing the manifold bolts? anything to watch out for?

put a ruler accross the mating surface of the replacement manifold to make sure its better that the one your taking off.
do the nuts up centre outward.

okay im half way through this, old manifold off. Surfaces all cleaned up ready for the new one to take its place... its all going well...... abit too well in fact, im waiting for something to go badly wrong!
Although when i took the little black box off the back of the engine both the rubber pipes were in poor shape and have been bodged, needless to say they ripped apart when i went to take it out, also noticed the box was full of sum sort of wirey oily stuff which i cant get out through the holes, does this box need to be here and what does it do?
Also any suggestions of how to temp fix the broken pipes till i can get to a scrappy or buy new?

Nevamind with the help or lack of! Ive had a Pi****g gut full of this car now. Another evening wasted and the car sounds worse than when i first started.

Calm down mate, tomorrow is a new day! ;) If you haven't got a Haynes Manual for your car have a look at this link & save the pdf on your computer. While not the 'be all & end all', it will help :y And as for the rant (above) , we've all been there mate, & will understand your frustration, but most on here are at work during the day or night & have lives outside the OOF too, so expecting an answer to all your questions PDQ is asking a bit much? & alienating the natives wont help anyone in the long run either? ;). Good luck with it anyway :y

Hi Phil i know sorry i just needed to vent my anger, wasnt aimed at anyone. :(
You know what its like u spend hours trying to fix something and get no-where, also i desperatly need it put right coz ive got a funeral to goto in Devon on tuesday and havent got much time to get it done, cant even take it to a garage tommorow as its sunday and they will prob want me to book it in if i ring monday....ARRRRGGGHHHHHH

Sorry fella, was mowing the lawn when you were having this trouble.
The 'flametrap' box is filled with wire wrapped into a little ball a bit like the things you bung in your kettle to collect the hard-water scale. In this case it's designed to help the oil mist from the crankcase fumes condense and drip back down the metal breather instead of clogging up your breather pipes on the way to the throttle body.
It isn't essential, certainly not short term. Any old bit of rubber hose that will link together the metal breather pipe and the camcover will do.
I think it might be 19/20mm I/D hose you need to re-plumb it, and most motor factors will carry something like that.
Whole new box is not expensive from Vx if you can't be bothered to dissolve all the condensed crud in carb cleaner, though it doesn't come with the necessary hose bits IIRC.

Im going to buy a new one of these box things tommorow with the pipes, hopefully they will hav em in stock.
I ended up payin for a mechanic to come out today to look at the manifold, he took it off checked it all out then put it bk tightening the bolts up and it seems lots better although the blow is still noticeable.
So after a busy few hours, im taking it over to his garage tommorow so he can get it on the ramps and have a proper look, hopefully fingers crossed then it will be sorted once and for all!!!
