Title: What's this next to the fuel pipes
Post by: Bumbazor on 24 August 2010, 19:58:09
I replaced my engine the other day but I have noticed something next to the fuel pipes that I don't remember being like that before.

I can't remember if I disconnected it or not, so can anyone identify this pipe and what it should connect to? Its the small black thing cable tied to the fuel pipe.

Looks like a vac pipe or the pipe that goes to the carbon canister under the wing

I don't think it's a vac pipe; I have just checked all those based on the diagram on here and they are all connected.
It does disappear under the wing I think but what should the open end go to (ie the open end you can see)?

It should be going to a solenoid valve (two vac pipes, one electrical conn) if it is going to the carbon canister at the other end, I think.

Don't know where this valve lives on a V6, look for something in stretching range of it, with another vac pipe going to somewhere on the intake.

yes, it's the purge line from the activated charcoal canister in the wing to the purge valve affixed to the engine breather can at the back of the driver-side cylinder head. - the one with the red connector  (2 wire)

Can you identify where the purge valve is on this picture please? I know where the breather box is but I don't remember any valve on it.

If it is an automatic then the likelyhood is that it is the gearbox breather pipe and should be as it is - open to the atmosphere to relieve any pressure buildup in the gearbox which would blow the seals.
Its usually tied up under the scuttle at the back near to the wiper motor.

No its not the gearbox breather pipe; that is somewhere else.

Right, I'll have a look after work today.

top right of picture - there's a 10mm rubber hose which is angled downwards to the outside of the engine. This hose is the breather box to plenum rear hose.

On the picture, you can see, behind the above-mentioned hose, a 90 degree elbow coming out of the purge valve. Your pipe fits into this elbow - there may be an extension tube, too if it won't reach.
