Title: ECU coolant temperature sensor had it?
Post by: MrDJ on 24 August 2010, 08:55:45
Two different mechs have told me mine could be the reason I have high fuel consumption yet on the sensors explained post of here they say very rarely go?

Has anyone had to change one or are the mechs barking up the wrong tree?

No fault codes BTW.

I've had one 'go', but it was caused by the wiring to it shorting to other (injector) wiring within the trunking.
Did get EML and codes with that.

Trouble is they can go out of spec quite a way before they'll generate codes, 'cos they operate over a fairly wide possible temperature range.

My advice would be to trace the signal wire of it (yellow/red????)  back to the ECU connector and measure resistance to ground at the ECU connector pin (connector unplugged) when the engine is cold, and record the ambient temperature.

Then, if you're lucky  ;), someone will be able to do a similar measurement on a known good sensor, at a similar temperature, as a cross-check.

Just bought one new for £9 from local motor factors - fitting it looks a nightmare though!

May be easier to fit coming from below rather than over the top, if you have a safe way of getting the car high enough.

Before you fit it, measure its resistance at a known temperature, or preferably two (20 and 100C?).

Then you can compare with what's on the car/what comes off.

Could be useful for others in future if you can post up the size of socket that fits it.  :y

Mate sorted it today - was a 21 to get it off and the new (aftermarket) was a 19.

Haven't taken for a good spin yet but instant consumption readout looks better even on the 3 mile run back home :)
