Title: Question about low battery and starting
Post by: Bumbazor on 27 August 2010, 06:00:25
When I replaced the engine in my car I noticed my battery was a bit low, although I didn't test it with a multimeter.

On turning the key to position 2 (ie just before ignition) all the usual lights came on, but those that normally go out, didn't. Of course the engine management light, oil pressure, and the other one I can't remember don't go out until the engine is running. I'm sure I remember some stay on for a few seconds then go out, even before ignition. Now, I'm left with at least the ABS and TC lights on. When I attempt to start the engine, the lights dim slightly but nothing else happens, so I suspect a flat (ish) battery.

The battery is charging now, but can anyone confirm my suspicion that a low battery would cause the behaviour I described with the lights staying on when they should go out?

I'll be doing a paperclip test on it later anyway, so should know more soon.

If the engine did not turn over (crank) at all and the lights only dimmed slightly then I would supect starter motor or associated wiring.
If the lights dimmed to virtually nothing then quite possibly a flat battery.

Predictable operation of these safety systems requires the correct supply voltage, so if it goes outside limits, they complain.

I HTF that's the problem, rather than the faulty ABS ECU problem I have read about, causing similar symptoms. fingers crossed for later this afternoon.

If it works the car might even get a celebratory clean!
