hi all at oof ive sourced a autobox for my 2.2 cd but the box is still in the car.does anyone know does it have to be removed complete with torque converter and is it just a srtaightforward nuts and bolts swap job.any help would be a big help as ive never done a big job like this.cheers for any advice :-/

if you put location in to you profil then meybe someone local will help swap box for you

Torque convertor etc should be the same..don't see why it should be different
Yeas its just a nut and bolt job,but heavy stuff...certainly wouldn't advise doing it without help

you unbolt the torque converter from the drive plate and push it back onto gearbox then remove whole unit as one,watch the weight though as with all the fluid and the converter it is quite a heavy lump

thanks for that mate yea ill probably need a hydraulic lift or somthin.do you know if the box in the 2.5td pre facelift is the same as my 2002 2.2petrol please say it is .cheers :)

I Have a vauge recollection something is different on the TD....think it is 'just' the bellhousing you need to swap. Possibly TC too?

Both JB, Bellhousing and TC from the original box on to the new box. They are both AR25's so the same :y

good news at last.at least they are the same.is there any nasties i should be looking for when doin the changeover :-/

Just doing it will be nasty enough i think mate :(
Dont imagine it will be much fun...
Will be though when you put it in drive and bugger off up the street :y

The unit weighs about 85 kgs so you need two people in the street or a garage hoist and so on.
Two areas to watch out for. 1st make sure you have disconnected all the electrical parts of the loom to the gearbox.
second when you remove the box or when you are putting the replacemnet in it comes off and goes on "horizontal" otherwise you can damage the spigot coming out of the engine.

watch out when removing and fitting the electrical conecting plugs as you can easily bend the conectors or push the socket into the gearbox (especially if the plastic on the socket as gone fragile)

Unbolt the torque converter from the driveplate and remove it with the gearbox. Install it with the gearbox when you refit. Otherwise, you run the risk of damaging the bush and oil seal where the TC nose joins the gearbox.
