Title: 3.0 v6 won't idle
Post by: Knight3179 on 01 September 2010, 22:00:26
as above, revs lumpy, like not firing on all cylinders,up to about 2,000 rpm, then revs up the range fine, but won't stay running, foot off cuts out instantly,no warning lights, leaking cam gasket, but leaking onto manifold near as can see,tho maybe leaking elsewhere, though wouldn't explain instant cutting out, lumpy revving if plugs full of oil
any ideas?

Cam Cover Gaskets failed, probably due to blocked breathers.  Whip off the Leads and you'll probably find oil in the plug wells.

While you are there, feel around the back of the engine and see if the DIS-Pack is breaking up.

Not hard, but fiddly to replace.

It is located behind the engine, beneath the scuttle panel.  If you follow the Plenum back to the rear, it's down the back, on the passenger side of the Plenum.  You'll know where it is when you feel all the Plug Leads.  :y

Pic of broken and new

Thanks for that, but as got to change cam gaskets anyway it might be easier to get at once all thats out of the way?if plug holes are drowned what best way?syringe it out?and change plugs cause probably ruined,

Yes, syringe it out, then use a rag on the end of something small to mop up the rest.  Just get as much out as you can.  :y

Plugs may be fine, just clean up with wire brush and re-fit, but for the cost, if you can afford it, replace them.

DIS-Pack will be much easier with cam covers off.  It has been suggested that they will fail even without water damage (as mine suffered) so could be playing up, even if not muntered as mine was.
