Title: Tighten water pump bolt without Timing Cover off!
Post by: TestOmega on 31 August 2010, 19:57:52
I have just finished doing the timing belt in pretty sweltering heat and I am a novice.  I followed the OOF Cambelt DVD to the T and tightened the new Water Pump bolts to 25 NM.  I was flushing coolant following instructions in the Maintenance guide at OOF.

Water was trickling from the area of the water pump to the floor.  It was a fast drip and slowly became a trickle.  I completed the flush and did a short drive with fresh coolant.  There is minor leak still apparent.

Questions:

1.  Is it air in the system causing some minor leak and would it get better with time?
2.  I am newbie and it would be pretty disheartening to remove the Timing belt cover again.  Is it possible to reach the water pump bolts without removing timing cover with an off set wrench, etc.?

Thanks and any other comments.

Sounds like the water pump seal wasn't seated properly when it was fitted.  Sorry dude but it's camcover off, think of it as training for future maintenance on the car :y ;D

Thank you and it worked.

As a matter of fact when I removed the water pump there was no gasket.  I remember seeing 3/4 of a gasket under the car when I originally installed the new pump.  I think it partially slid off and got chewed up between timing covers.

Hard to get a replacement gasket so greased and re-installed the one from old pump as it was pretty good and much better than the tube like from China.

I am getting better but still a bit of a chore.

Cheers.

The water pump does not have a gasket, it has an O ring

Did you clean the mating surface up before fitting the new water pump. Its common for the old waterpump O-ring to stick to the mating surface.
You can get at the waterpump bolts without removing the cam belt cover but its tight and don't drop anything ;)

I did the following,

1.  Cleaned mating surface lightly with wet emery per OOF maintenance guide.

2.  I installed the O ring (sorry Mark DTM) for bad English.  I lightly grease the O ring (per OOF maintenance guide) before seating it in the Water Pump groove.

3.  I tigtened the bolts per Mark DTM torque spec of 25NM in the OOF maintenance guide.

I cleaned the area with fresh water and vaccuum to remove any residues of coolant, etc.

4.  Installed everything back, so far so good.

ElitePete thanks. I thought the bolts were reachable too but all that coolant (almost 6L) around the timing belt, etc., did not give me a good feeling so I bit the bullet and removed the Timing belt cover per OOF DVD.  However, definitely good idea if one needs to just torque check the bolts which in my case were torqued right but the O ring was the issue.

Much obliged in your comments and time. :y
