Title: noise on startup
Post by: pauls on 30 August 2010, 17:16:21
Hi when i start my car i get a noise from the front of the engine. It sounds like a pulley is slipping. This noise stops after driving about 50ft up the road. I was hopping that someboby might have a idea  :question

could be the auxillary belt tensioner bearing a bit dry ....  :-/ As you look under the bonnet, the tensioner is top left pulley. 15mm spanner and lever to the right - as though you're tightening the nut - will slacken off the belt enough for you to slip it off the pulley. Once the belt is off, undo the nut & the tensioner pulley will come off. If the bearing isn't knackered, you might get away with gently flicking the dust seal out of the bearing & packing a little more grease in there. Failing that, a new tensioner pulley is available seperately from Vauxhall Beware that not all dealers know this & want to sell you the whole thing.  :y

Part number for pulley is 9157962 £26.35+VAT  :y

If the belt has been slipping on the pulley for a little while, you may be better off replacing the belt.  Check the condition of the ribs carefully.  ;)

It'll be the SAI pump mate - at front nearside - you can safely disconnect it if it gets on your nerves :y

Good afternoon, after speaking to a mechanic he wants to much money to do what sounds like a easy job. Once you have taken the belt off and the tensioner and put the new one on should the belt slip straight back on and how do you know if it is tight enough, sorry but i don't know anything about cars.. But I can built you a house.
cheers Psul

If you follow the advice above and only fit a new pulley, the automatic spring loaded tensioner remains on the car. You end up with the same tension you started with but a nice quite pulley.

Hth.
