Title: driving different cars
Post by: Jay w on 09 January 2008, 19:18:52
this July we are off again to south of france, like last year we will be in the miggy.
unlike last year I want to share the driving, sister in law is coming with us and I have asked her to drive from Plymouth to Dover.
she freaked when I asked her!! she regularly drives from porstmouth to darlington and portsmouth to plymouth so the distance isn't an issue, i'll do all the french driving.
she wants to have a couple of weeks to get use to the car!!! she currently drives a seat ibiza, its not the size thats an issue, or that its someone elses car.......
its because it an auto, she can't cope with that.....

wtf???

aha now thats where the problem lies, you see for her less pedals means more issues :o she doesn't know what to do with her left leg.......

Wait until i tell her about cruise control, that will really spin her out   ;D

oh no, i just want to see the look on her face when she realises that she doesn't have to touch the pedals.........

she is a control freak so having gadgets like auto, cruise just make her mad  ;D

Old mate of mine who only drove big Yank autos told me the solution to that problem years ago,
Give her a dead leg before she starts and she'll be fine.
 ;D

Oddly, my mum had no qualms about driving my Omega, she's got a Mazda 3... a brief familiarisation, then we were out on the road... she even reverse parked into a bay, better than she ever does in her own car...

The first time I drove a auto I kept stamping on the brake  ;D
Took about 5 mins to get it in my head not to ::)
Now I put my left leg well out of the way till I get used to it.
You could tie her leg to the seat to stop this or risk headbutting the windscreen ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

In all seriousness, get her to cross her left leg under her right one.

It worked for me. Stopped me headbutting the windscreen a number of times.

Funnily enough I never had this problem when I hired cars in the US. It was more the cornering (yes, they do exist in the US!) I had issues with, had to use a lot more of the brakes than I usually do, and the rubber band effect on the throttle doesn't inspire confidence through the corners.

I did hit my left hand on the door a few times as I reached for the gear stick though. Almost got in the passenger side a few times as well ::)

I've never had a problem swapping between the two, and I think only once or twice have I "gone for the clutch" in an auto but then I do drive both on a regular basis.

It seems to be folk who only drive an auto for years on end and then get back into a manual who have real bother.

with the exception of about 20 miles it is all straight fast A road and little use of the brake or clutch......

i think giving her a dead leg as she gets in the car might work  :y

On a similar note, I regularly switch between 5sp and 6sp manual gearboxes, and for a while I worried that I'd end up going for the non-existant 6th on the Omega (which is reverse of course :o) but I never have. I even recently drove an automatic in the UK (and yes I hated it ;) ) and the only time I went for the clutch was when I was first pulling away and I wanted to put it into reverse. I actually found myself looking at the floor before remembering it was automatic! In defence though it was an 840Ci so very similar to my own car -- easy to forget it's missing the "driver's pack" option ;)
