Title: Door Check Straps
Post by: Broomies Mate on 03 September 2010, 13:00:02
Having owned this Mig for a couple of months now, it's time to fix the Drivers Door Check Strap.

Unfortunately, it's not as straight forward as I first thought.

The check strap mechanism type thingy has actually ripped itself from the Door.  I found it in the bottom of the door.  The metal has torn away.

Is there any way of re-fitting this?  Doesn't look like much room there to fit a larger section of metal and spot weld it into place.

Just wondered if anyone had any success at fixing a check strap when it's this far gone?  :y

Mike.

I think that there is a "set" available from dealers just for these cases, including a piece of sheet metal for reinforcement, I think this could be also used to repair a torn door?

I know one Omega that had the same as you, the door was welded. Unfortunately I do not have any pics of that  :'(

I believe the repair set only works if the strap hasn't torn away from the door casing - if it's torn away you have to get a sheet welded in to the door..

Ditto if it's starting to tear away from the A pillar, it's weld only.

There are some folks on here who can do this, I believe, depending on your location..

Thanks for the replies.  Looks like I'll have to fabricate and weld a small plate to the door.  I think the only way to successfully do this and make it look half tidy will be to remove the door.

When I do it, I'll document the steps with pictures and make a HowTo.

Mine had ripped itself off the door. I used the two reinforcement plates and it's as good as new.

No need to remove the door - and easy to make a pair of plates (no need to weld them in place) - best to get access by removing all the screws from the bottom half of the door card, pulling away and removing the door speaker - this allows you to get access from inside the door - bit fiddly but do-able
