Post by: DK MV6 on 15 September 2010, 20:22:12
Hello.

Im hunting around for various faults and gremlings in my cooling system..
In recently bought this Omega MV6 auto with aircon. year 1995.
Can anyone tell me what the part on the picture below is, and what it does.?

Thank you.

Its part of winter pack. Its a small pump that runs independently, allowing heat in the (stopped) engine to circulate to the cabin.

It looks like it could be an electric coolant circulation pump, designed to circulate coolant around the block when the engine stops (at higher tewmps) to prevent coolant hot spots.

ii think it could be an auxillary pump, used to pump coolant round, part of the optional winter pack, or so i hear. I think it is located in engine bay on side of drivers side wheel arch, below expansion tank, where cruise control would normally be.

The facelift one works more as you would expect it to. Prefacelift needs ign on = flat battery in no time.....

From across the pond it appears as Part Number 1 on the Omega sister,

except that is the one that sits on the rad (right hand side when viewed from the front) so is not part of the winter pack

Ah, yes, good point. Well spotted.

General consensus (on the facelift version at least) seems to be to bin it. About as useful as an ashtray on a motorbike .
I binned mine recently - on advice from Kevin Wood.

OK, I have no problem with binning it, if it does no good. But, if I get rid, I will lose the heater function when engine stopped, surely? I have used this Winter pack "toy" on one or two occasions, and don't want to rip out useful parts only to lose spec.

If you find it useful then it might be best to keep it. :y

Wow I did not even know it has function.  I always kept my engine running while temporarily parked to keep warm in winter!

Thanks.

I will be keeping it Albs, but if the general concensus here is to bin it, there has to be a reason. I would just like to know why it is advisable to get rid.

From stripping my pre facelift Mv6 I've discovered my car had two aux. water pumps, one mounted to the radiator and another one bolted to the inner wing, that one was plumbed into the h.b.v. and the matrix.

I would not say general concensus.

I persoanly always found it helped to get the interior a bit warmer a bit quicker in winter to.

Quite useful

thanks for all the reply´s guys.! Thats some good info.

Im a bit worried these days because i found that when i turn off the engine while hot, the coolant hoses gets REALLY hard.. Ofcourse they will expand a bit because the water is hot and not circulating because the engine is off.
I just think they are abnormal hard.
So i hoped that someone would respond that the device i uploaded a picture off, was an aux.waterpump designed to circulate hot coolant when engine was switched off.
Because that would explain why my coolant hoses got rock hard when engine was stopped. ( as in if that waterpump didnt work , i could be the reason.)
