Title: Code 135
Post by: albitz on 15 September 2010, 19:58:17
Telltale (checklight) voltage low - anyone know what this means ?
Coming up the M11 this evening car was obviously way down on power.
Powere was surging up/down at approx 1 second intervals - very noticeable. Almost as if I was slowly lifting then depressing the pedal, rev counter was moving up and down a bit as well.
Had a listen under the bonnet. can hear a bit of buzzing from drivers side rear of engine- could be air getting sucked in/ blown out, could be just an iffy ex man. gasket. :-/ may not be connected.
Seems to miss when I blip the throttle from tickover.
Too dark to do much at the moment, but paperclipped and got 135 - no idea what it means tbh.
Any help appreciated. :y

Ignore the 135 - though do check alternator as per Kevin Wood's guide.

Done some (but not yet all) of the alternator checks. Everything ok so far. Tbh, dont understand why that would cause the problem, and what connection the alternator has to code 135.
The noise I can hear makes me suspect its sucking in air somewhere (possibly o/s plenum)but I have checked all the vacuum connections, cant see anything amiss. Its possible that the noise is a small leak from ex. man. so it could be a red herring.
Its definetely running lumpy and sluggish. Got the MOT at 2 o,clock, hope whatever is wrong doesnt mess up the emissions readings. :'(

The only thing I have done to the car recently was to remove the powersounder. Cant see that being in any way connected.  :-/

Is this a DBW car? If so, 135 is an O2 Heater malfunction. Could explain the surging if the O2 loop was going a little wild.

On a non-DBW car it's check light circuit, IIRC, so not important.

Ah, you say paperclipped, so not DBW. I'll get my coat. :-[

Problem solved. :-[ ::)
Went for the MOT, and when the MOT man tried to insert the gas probe thing in the exhaust he found lots of glassfibre wadding in the way, which was blocking the exhaust - almost completely. Fished it out with a coathanger with a hook bent on the end, and it now runs fine. ::) ;D

Wheres the fibreglass come from? Is it part of the exhaust system come adrift or has someone stuffed it up your rear end (so to speak)?

It is used for the purpose of sound absorption in exhaust boxes. :y

Not really .. :(

If you have the "horsehair" syndrome of wadding coming from the exhaust .. the internals have corroded and are disintegrating.

New Exhaust needed.

If you don't you risk damage to the engine at worst, or reduced performance at best. The flow of the exhaust will be severly compromised and it CAN block completely.. the back pressure this develops does not do the engine any good at all.

I was hoping it was just the back box. Will have to take it off and investigate I think. :(

As Entwood rightly says, you do need to look at the exhaust, as there will be far more to come out, and law of sod will say it will block up catasphorically at the most inopportune moment ;D

Eternal, £130 for both centres and backbox, delivered. Had one on my MV6 since December, still reckon its probably the best of the pattern ones.

Would that be when hitting the "S" button to pull around 2 tractors with large trailers of hay on board, just start to pull alongside the first one when all power dissapears almost instantly, followed by a maoosive "bang" from under the car, followed by an odd "tinkling" sound, emissions light on, limp mode ???

Luckily :) there was nothing coming the other way and I made into a field gateway safely. Back box was completely split and hanging off. AA called to get me home. New rear box, all codes reset and the car drove well .. actually better than it had been, I must have slowly got used to the loss of peformance as the box "gunged" up, but I had been pulling lumps of stuff out of the exhaust pipe for a couple of weeks .. :(

This was all in the old blue 2.5
