on tickover the speedo needle flicks from 0-10mph, up and down fairly quickly, it does this for a while and some times sits a 5mph, its a 95 2.5td. also some times when i accelerate it sits at 5mph then shoots up to what ever speed im doing. anyone came across this issue?
many thanks

bump! anyone hazard a guess

OK a guess. Is the pickup for the speedo taken from the ABS sensor, could this be your problem. :-/
-
i see your point but dont think this is the trouble as no abs light on oe even any intermitant faults stored on abs ecu

I know you are clutching at straws, but I'd suggest not a feasible answer as the problem exists at idle (so I assume standstill).
Could be a number of things;
Faulty Dash Panel
Bad Earth
Dodgy Connection
etc etc

yea just wondering had anyone seen this before. might try a sender unit

The sender unit are the ABS sensors... ;)
The receivers are the guage on the dash.
As said, try reseating the head unit to ensure clean contact.....

I had this problem a little while ago and found that one of the pins behind the dash clocks wasn't touch te socket enough so any form movement to the clocks it would then make the speedo clock 'bounce' all over the place. All I done was to move the pin out a little more, carefully though, so It would make a proper contact, now I have a stable speedo needle no more bounce.

had the dash out today any fiddled about with it but unfortunately the problem is still occuring, maybe try another dash unit in and see what happens
