Title: Boiling up
Post by: b19oot on 18 September 2010, 17:52:30
After the palava with it loosing power i tried it and the temp goes into the red and the fan cuts in then the fan cuts off but the temp is still 100 if i undo the header tank an let the water/steam out the fan cuts back in an lowers the temp of the car like it was a massive airlock.

Does anybody know what this could be?   Headgasket?

If you haven't any coolant in the oil then it's unlikely to be head-gasket.
Sounds like you could have a blockage somewhere in the cooling system - try flushing your rad, or could be kackered water-pump or even kackerted thermostat (stuck closed, but unlikely as when they fail they usually do so in open position)

the oil cap is a little creamy just inside but this could be due to standing

That's common on the V's, take the filler cap off, take the neck off and refit the cap directly to the rocker cover. Clean the neck and stow it in the boot for oil change/top-up time. That'll hold off the mayo :y

Thermostats do jam shut aswell as open. You could try flushing the whole system out with just water and a hose just to make sure the waterways are clear.
